DENVER (AP) - John McCain tapped little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah
Palin to be his vice presidential running mate on Friday in a startling selection on the eve of the Republican National Convention.
Two senior campaign officials disclosed McCain's decision a few
hours before the Republican presidential nominee-to-be and his newly-minted running mate appeared at a rally in swing-state Ohio.
Palin, like McCain, is a conservative with a maverick streak who has shown a willingness to clash with others in her own party. A self-styled hockey mom and political reformer, she has been governor of her state less than two years.
Palin's selection shocked numerous Republican officials.
At 44, Palin is a generation younger that Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, who is Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic
ticket.
She is three years Obama's junior, as well - and McCain has made
much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.
In making his pick, McCain passed over several more prominent
prospects who had figured in speculation for months - Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former
Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge among them.
Palin flew overnight to an airport in Ohio near Dayton, and even as she awaited her formal introduction, some aides said they had believed she was at home in Alaska.
She is a former mayor of Wasilla who became governor of her state in December, 2006 after ousting a governor of her own party in a primary and then dispatching a former governor in the general election.
More recently, she has come under the scrutiny of an investigation by the Republican-controlled legislature into the possibility that she ordered the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire her former brother-in-law as a state trooper.
The timing of McCain's selection appeared designed to limit any
political gain Obama yields from his own convention, which ended Thursday night with his nominating acceptance speech before an
estimated 84,000 in Invesco Field in Colorado.
Public opinion polls show a close race between Obama and McCain,
and with scarcely two months remaining until the election, neither
contender can allow the other to jump out to a big post-convention lead.
McCain has had months to consider his choice, and has made it clear to reporters that one of his overriding goals was to avoid a situation like the one in 1988, when Dan Quayle was thrown into a
national campaign with little preparation.
Palin has a long history of run-ins with the Alaska GOP hierarchy, giving her genuine maverick status and reformer credentials that could complement McCain's image.
Two years ago, she ousted the state's Republican incumbent
governor, Frank Murkowski in the primary, despite having little money and little establishment backing.
She has also distanced herself from two senior Republican office-holders, sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don young. Both men are under federal corruption investigations.
She had earned stripes - and enmity - after Murkowski made her
head of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. From that
post, she exposed ethical violations by the state GOP chairman, also a fellow commissioner.
She and her husband Todd Palin, have five children. The latest, a baby, was born with Down syndrome.

Was Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin a good choice for the Republican Vice Presidential Candidate?
Yes
No
Doesn't matter to me.

I think Palin is a SUPER choice for McCain. With her on the ticket, Obama/Biden just got a sure victory in November! Thanks McCain!

For David and narrow minded GOP with blinders on, our country now suffers the largest deficit in history at the hands of the GOP; we invaded a country, killed thousands, and watched a leader hung; the Federal Reserve (not government related) is a group of wealthy bankers around the world that have great control over housing, stock market, and other financial matters; and, if you truly think Clinton was the only man in Washington with an itch to scratch or that Bush has kept this country safe, you need to wake up! Our borders are open! History shows that when our country was under attack, our borders were closed, those of the same nationality of the attackers were held and not put on a plane and given safe haven out of the country as the Saudis were after 9/11. Heck they even landed on the tarmack in Lexinton while all other planes were grounded. Let us all not forget Katrina. I am an American, a believer in Jesus Christ, and ALL our people are valuable.

Its not about Sarah Palin being a woman its about her being a real person. I appreciate her values and if anyone can relate to us "regular folks" I think she can and will. I was going to vote for McCain but with some reservation....but now I will feel great about casting that vote.

how about mcain and biden together in the whitehouse it would be nice to have an adult back in the whitehouse.

I am disgusted wiyh all of them throw them out and lets start over

Posted by: Eddie Location: Pikeville on Sep 1, 2008 at 05:28 PM
To all you Democrat whiners, I say this: Palin has at least managed a small town as a mayor, she's been on a city commission, she has been a Governor, her husband works on the North Slope Oil fields as a WORKER, not an executive, they salmon fish together, she once broke several fingers while fishing and continued fishing. They have owned a small business just a few years ago, etc. This woman GETS IT, when it comes to the average person, far more than ANY candidate on either ticket. She has been there and dealt with the issues that come from the federal levels of dealing with unfunded mandates, she has had to walk the streets and answer to average citizens face to face, unlike Biden, unlike Obama, and unlike McCain. She is EXACTLY what Washington needs right now, and you know it. Your blowhard words and hate-filled invective is only because of YOUR desperation, wondering why your candidate couldn't find someone to relate to the average Joe/Jane like she can.

FOR CJ IN ASHLAND; I BEG TO DIFFER. CLINTON WAS NOT ONLY THE MOST SCANDOULOUS PRESIDENT IN HISTORY, HE WAS THE WORST. DOT COM BUST, A 'TRUE' RECESSION DURING HIS LAST YEAR OF OFFICE, YES A TRUE RECESSION, NOT A SLOWING ECONOMY, A MILITARY THAT WAS BRUSHED ASIDE, IMPEACHMENT, THREE OF AMERICAS HIGHEST TAX INCREASES. MORE HOMEOWNERS UNDER THE BUSH ADMIN THAN ANY OTHER, NOT HIS FAULT THE BANKS GAVE A MORTGAGE TO ANYONE THAT COULD BREATH, THE STOCK MARKET GREW SUBSTANTIALLY, BENEFICIAL TAX BREAKS AND A STRONG MILITARY. OH YES, DON'T FORGET THAT IRAQ IS NOW A FREE COUNTRY GETTING BETTER DAILY. WE ARE NOW AN AWARE COUNTRY TO TERRORIST VS TURNING OUR HEADS AND PRETENDING AS CLINTON DONE. BUSH KEPT ME SAFE, EMPLOYED, IN A HOME, BROUGHT HOME THREE TIMES THE $ AND MADE MONEY IN THE STOCK MARKET DURING THE ADMIN OF BUSH. DID BUSH MAKE MISTAKES, SURE. HOWEVER HE IS NOT A LYING, *@#% HOPPER, FAKE LIKE CLINTON IS. CJ, YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY HATE FILLED JUST LIKE YOU "DIM" PARTY. TOO BAD FOR YOU.

Those folks touting Obama as a Christian should be ashamed of themselves as well. It was only Obama's two fathers that were Muslim and the rest of his family in Kenya.

WHAT A TERRIBLE CHOICE. Another Republican voting for the Obama ticket!

Posted by: Darren Location: CKY on Sep 1, 2008 at 08:35 AM
I heard Barack Hussein Obama is a Muslim? Could the people backing this radical elaborate? I saw his preacher on TV preaching hate. Can anyone explain to me why? I heard Obama has associated himself with radicals most of his adult life? Can a democrat explain this for me? I heard Obama voted to DENY HEALTH CARE to INFANTS when their ABORTION DR "Messed Up." Can ANYONE explain this one? Sickening this man is running for president. Even sicker, ignorant AMERICANS supporting this evil man. I am going the safe route and casting my vote for the republicans, I like Palin. I think she should be pegged "America's Mom." I feel SAFER already.

Hey Frank in Hindman; Don't worry about four more years of Republican leadership. That won't happen, it will be SIXTEEN MORE YEARS!!!

Posted by: Ken Location: Illinois on Sep 1, 2008 at 08:18 AM
Obama has a lot of experience running for political office. That's it. He does NOT have Senate experience because he's done nothing but run for President since becoming Senator in an uncontested election. Also he won both State and U.S. office by uncovering dirt on his opponents and causing them to withdraw. Typical dirty Chicago politics. Illinois has had to get by with only one working Senator for four years. The country can't afford a do-nothing President at this critical time. Go McCain/Palin!

All those in favor of Palin would vote Republican no matter what. After all, we have all suffered through George the Weasel, the worse President in the history of the USA, and you continue to think he is wonderful. So it just makes sense to me that you continue to critique Obama and support McCain. Your ideals would put a madman and a Barbie doll in control of the American people. My vote goes to the true representation of Americanism, Obama and Biden. Neither are warmongers, they support the American people, and their platform is designed for the middle class in America. Your rhetoric about Obama being a Muslim is outdated. I find it amusing that you express hatred toward Muslims, all the while not recognizing that you also have extremists in the Christian right who are definitely wrong in their ideals. I know of no where in the Bible it states that it is okay to kill as "thou shall not kill is the same in any language." There is no clause that states unless Bush says so!

Posted by: Jeremy Location: Prestonsburg on Sep 1, 2008 at 02:22 AM
To Frank Jacobs from Hindman, you should be ashamed of yourself for perpetuating the myth that Obama is a Muslim. I find it very frustrating when people are willing to post such ignorant information on public forums. Both Obama and McCain are good Christian men who love their country. Focus on the issues!

Are you people seriously going to vote for Hockey Mom? When she was asked her opinion about the possibility of being McCain's running mate, do you know what her response was? "What is it exactly that the VP does every day?" There ya go. There is the Hockey Mom genius that will be a heartbeat away from the Presidency. Well, come to think of it, that is about the same intelligence level of the President we have now, so I don't know why I am shocked.

what a choice

Posted by: David Location: Georgetown on Aug 31, 2008 at 12:47 PM
To Anonymous in Richmond. Obama has served 184 DAYS in the Senate, using most of them to 'campaign.' Palin has been a Mom, Coach, Wife, Homemaker, Planner, PTA member, City Concil Lady, Mayor and a Governor. Now I'd say thats more than the 184 day Liberal Senate Freshman. Come on, get real here, Palin is a wonderful, exicting, welcomed fresh face to lead America. Just like McCain said Friday, This person is the exact change America needs! McCain and Palin in 08!

Posted by: Michelle Location: Eastern KY on Aug 31, 2008 at 11:36 AM
Way to go McCain! I must say this whole time I have not been impressed by neither candidate. But now Palin, her speech impressed me. They have my vote. I agree with Chris, Obama is bitter, and I have tryed to keep an open mind, I have listen, researched and watched for a long time. At first I even liked Michelle, but now it is as if you can see a chip on her shoulder. The US is not runned solely by the President, I think we should all look at the local level and go up the ladder. Americans have to come to the realization that everyone is not going to agree on all issues and start working for a common meeting ground.

Posted by: Zatoichi Location: Richmond on Aug 31, 2008 at 10:08 AM
If you liberals call the right place, Trinity Church in Chicago, that preaches hate and intolerance then I guess the Obama's head is in the right place....squarely up his rear end.

Honest?!?! She was upset because the Alaska State Police Comissioner wouldnot fire her brother in law who was a State Trooper. Because he divorced her sister and was in a vicious custody battle. Now Alaskan Lawmakers are investigating to see whether she overstepped her bounds by firing the Public Safety Offical who wouldn't fire her brother-in-law! According to Roy Sarah is honest. She supported The Bridge to nowhere. Now she is trying to rewrite history by saying she opposed it. Obama will win and she will go home!

Some folks say McCain picked Gov. Sarah Palin to get votes from women... HE IS GETTING MINE!!! I had already decided to vote McCain way before he picked Palin. I agree with Chris from Lexington, Obama scares me too. He is NOT a man to trust! MCCAIN/PALIN 2008

Posted by: Nathan on Aug 30, 2008 at 07:59 PM
Well it is offical, no more will I ever vote again! I will not vote for either, even if they gave me 100 million dollars. I guess some people can't see that our country is going to hell enough as it is and maybe not even care!

Posted by: Jessica Location: Frankfort on Aug 30, 2008 at 05:09 PM
McCain couldn't have made a better choice!! Those who say Palin is inexperienced or was chosen to gain the female vote are just foolish. Palin is just awesome, she is not only a governor, but also a mother of 5. She has a 4 mos old with down syndrome, and her oldest son is in Iraq. WOW, what a woman! She will be a great VP!

I laugh out loud at the hate filled liberals on here. Truly, the DNC has polluted your minds beyond repair. Palin is a choice of freshness. Unlike Obama that is a choice of hatred and dismay. The man is more bitter than his angry, bitter wife Michelle. Obama scares me to look at his mean eyes. How could anyone support this man? Oh yeah, they are liberals.

DESPERATE CHOICE FOR A DESPERATE CANDIDATE

Posted by: David Location: Georgetown on Aug 29, 2008 at 09:01 PM
I have never voted for a Republican presidential candidate, this year will bring the change. This is a great pick that adds the excitement needed for the McCain campaign.

Posted by: Al Location: Quincy, KY on Aug 29, 2008 at 07:32 PM
Good choice. Palin seems to be a lady with some sense. And as far as a woman leader -- Golda Meir and Margaret Thatcher did okay. Sarah Palin is the kind of leader the USA needs. She will well compliment McCain.

Posted by: Allen Location: KY on Aug 29, 2008 at 06:41 PM
Okay here's the skinny. Both candidates let their people down and here is why I have that opinion. Democrats wanted Barak to pick Hillary. He decided to pick someone with a ton of experience (Biden a Senator since '72)to help him get elected and get over the lack of experience creed the Repubs were talking about. The Republicans wanted McCain to pick Romney because he is the choice of conservatives and has a great track record of accomplishments but McCain picked a young woman (young by political standards) because he needed to appeal to the young and woman voters of the country to get elected. Neither care what the voters wanted; they only want to get elected. If you disagree with my opinion, tell me why and don't just say I'm wrong. I did not take sides on this issue. I just pointed out why I think neither candidate cares what their political party voters thinks. It's all about THEM getting elected and nothing more.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Richmond on Aug 29, 2008 at 06:37 PM
She's too inexperienced. I'm now voting for Obama. At least he's had YEARS, to her MONTHS. Way to go at losing supporters McCain.

Posted by: Chad Location: Independence on Aug 29, 2008 at 06:09 PM
I have always liked McCain and I think he made a great choice. This election is about experience and energy! McCain has the answer on both in my opinion. First there is no danger McCain will make the same mistakes George Bush has and both McCain and Obama will withdraw the troops at the same time. So there is not issue their! In fact Bush and Obama are like minded on time line for troop withdraw from Iraq and guess what they both have the same dates in mind. The only question is who will be better to lead in a dangerous expensive world? The clear choice is McCain. He has the experience to lead in all scenarios and he is a proponent of all forms of energy. McCain wants to drill for more oil and natural gas, put up wind mills, develop electric, and fuel cell vehicles. In other words McCain wants to do it all when it comes to energy and oil drilling will help us Now. It's a lie that it won't help now. Whats Obama's plan? Well we don't know but trust Obama he has one somewhere!

Posted by: Charlie Location: Lexington,KY on Aug 29, 2008 at 05:56 PM
Wow, What a great choice ! She is the only one of the four with any executive experience and fiscal responsibility. The other three have just been in the senate supposedly writing the laws. I don't think these two have a problem with me being from a small town and owning a bible and a gun. Thank You Senator McCain. I can't wait to vote on November 4th.

Posted by: cc Location: Jackson on Aug 29, 2008 at 05:34 PM
No way can she get Hillary's women voters. After Obama's speech Last nite. Obama is the man to lead our country. We need to get rid of the Big Oil People in the whitehouse.I Think McCain just added fuel to the fire With his coice V.P

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 29, 2008 at 04:31 PM
The US would be fine with Palin if McCain croaks. Just be sure to have a stacked cabinet behind her that knows what their doing, especially at secretary of defense. There's really no difference in my mind whether it would be Obama or her at the helms of the nation, their both under qualified.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 29, 2008 at 04:26 PM
I was really hoping he would choose Mitt Romney, but after Obama's pick, I think McCain could have chosen Donald Duck and just about anyone would still vote for him!

Posted by: Steve Location: Lexington on Aug 29, 2008 at 03:47 PM
Who? Sarah who??? When I heard the name on the radio, then heard she was Gov of one of the most sparsely populated states in our nation (which happens to be so conservative of a state it isn't even funny, makes Texas look like Massachusetts), I began laughing in the car. Obviously wanting the woman's vote...and with a woman who doesn't believe in equal pay for equal work and doesn't believe in a woman's right to control her body (and therefore must DIE if there's a complication instead of being able to live), there's no way she's going to attract very many females...ones with self-respect anyways. Well, at least the "no experience" card is out the window now, there's no way to criticize Obama about a perceived lack of experience when you have a VP candidate who has only been in statewide politics for LESS than 2 years, and has ZERO foreign policy experience, and ZERO economy experience (Alaska is a rich state because of oil, so it's never seen a hard economy). McCain is out of touch

Posted by: Christina Location: Madison Co. on Aug 29, 2008 at 03:21 PM
I am excited about this pick. I think McCain pick someone who is a bit more conservative than himself but is able to reason with both parties. I think this a good ticket for Washington! Bravo

Posted by: Early Cuyler Location: Squidville on Aug 29, 2008 at 02:41 PM
Right: I hate to point out the obvious to you buddy but she has waaayyyyyy more experience than Obama. I believe he has 143 working days as a Senator vs 2 years as a Governor of a large State. Quiet a diff wouldn't you agree? Probably not but then Dems are going to wringing thier hands and crying foul for the next 2 months! I can't wait to see her on the campaign trail, she will be attending lots of Hunting/Shooting Expos and there is no way Obama/Biden can compare to McCain/Palin on 2nd Amendment Rights! Your buddy Obama is going to be a for sure loser come November. McCain/Palin "08"

Sarah is the BEST PICK possible. I am a loyal Conservative that is proud and supportive EVERY year, not just "this year." Since I was six years old, I knew Regan was the man to defeat Carter and have been a Conservative since, never swaying from the party I believe in and support. Saying that, More than ever, I am excited and proud to say I am a Republican. Congratulations to McCain and Palin and know Kentucky is behind you all the way!

Posted by: JC Location: Madison County on Aug 29, 2008 at 01:06 PM
Good move John McCain, she will attract the young people from Osama (Oops, I mean Obama) and possibly take a large majority of Hillary's women voters! At any rate, Kentucky will most likely be a Republican state this year.

Posted by: tabitha Location: hustovnille on Aug 29, 2008 at 12:23 PM
I am very concerned that our conservative Governor would give ANY right other than to breathe to a convicted sex offender. What about rights of the victims? Forgiven, yes, but forgotten, no.

Posted by: Right Location: lexington on Aug 29, 2008 at 11:50 AM
Oh come on! How transparent is that pick for McCain. Trying to get the female vote. She has only had a top level job for 2 years. Before that a Major for 2 years of a town of 2000 then before that on it's council and before that Miss Alaska...ARE YOU KINDING ME. Well McCain can't make attacks on Obama about not having experiance anymore. What a bad Pick

Posted by: SS Minnow Location: Richmond on Aug 29, 2008 at 11:41 AM
Looks like McCain got it right!!! I pray that whomever wins in November will truly put all party politics aside and work for the people. Our country, once the greatest on earth, is slowly losing that title! We have to correct some major flaws in our society and political system before we totally lose the support and respect of the rest of the world.
