State Police Trooper Hits, Kills Man On Bicycle

A man is dead after an accident involving a Kentucky State Police trooper in Laurel County late Sunday night.

State police say the trooper was trying to avoid rear ending a vehicle on US 25 South near South Laurel High School.

The trooper, Christopher Roberts, ended up side swiping that car and hit two bicyclists.

One of the bicyclists died. Another had minor injuries.

The man who died has been identified as Chris Powers, 26, from Jonesboro, Illinois.

The second bicyclist, Kevin Alshouse, from McHenry, Illinois, was treated at the scene.

Trooper Roberts was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in London and has been released.

US 25 was shut down for hours as police investigated. It's now back open.
