LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky's governor has signed an order
declaring a state of emergency and invoking the state's anti-price
gouging law as Hurricane Ike bears down on the Texas coast.
Gov. Steve Beshear signed the order on Friday, saying gas stations started raising fuel prices overnight before the storm made landfall.
Beshear signed the order at the request of Attorney General Jack
Conway, who said in a letter released Friday that invoking the law now will help prevent predatory pricing.
Conway's spokeswoman Allison Martin said the Attorney General's
office has received reports of gas rising to $4.20 in some locations and exceeding $4.50 others.

This has done more for the environment than Al Gore ever dreamed of.Less cars on the road Less emissions maybe the LORD is cleaning things up.Look on the bright side you don't have to pack all that money around let the oil gods do it for you.

James from Salyersville said: "When I hear a politician claim he is interestd in what happens to the common man, I get goose bumps!? I'll have to disagree with you James; I actually get Diarrhea!

Big Oil will find a way to get the money. If Frankfort is, which we know better because it is not, interested in the common person, they would drop some of their taxes from oil prdoucts we must have. Especially, home heating this winter where kerosene/fuel oil is bouncing around five dollars per gallon, Kerosene is supposed to bea a cheap bi-product in the making of gasoline, but those fat cats in Frankfort make sure they they reap their profits no matter what the common person has to pay! When I hear a politician claim he is interestd in what happens to the common man, I get goose bumps!

I love it man it keeps the uninsured welfare Cadillac s off the roads and out of my BIG GAS GUZZLING FOUR WHEEL DRIVES WAY.

If you think Frankfort is going to do ANYTHING, you are just kidding yourselves! Our supposed representatives will do nothing except vote to give themselves another 5% pay raise with the money from fines (if any) that are paid by the gougers. If they will vote themselves a 5% pay raise when the rest or the state is broke and others (including state employees) are loosing their jobs, they will be laughing all the way to the bank when the state coffers are full. The people we elect and send to Frankfort care only for themselves. You and I mean nothing to them except on election day. Please STOP voting for the incumbents. That is the only way to invoke change. Politicians = Crooks, Thiefs, Liars!

What punishment will these gas stations receive? Pay a fine to the state from the profits from citizens? My, what protection the citizens have from price gouging! Sounds like more money for the house and senate to give themselves another pay raise and pat each other on the back. SSDD (same **** different day)

Oil is under 100 a barrel. Why is gas still almost 5.00 a gallon?

Posted by: madddd Location: paintsville ky on Sep 15, 2008 at 06:15 PM
any idiot can see that if a station owner has the same gas in his tanks today and tomorrow it goes up 25 to 50 cents over night and that is without a new delivery then he is cheating the public, but if you ask any gas station owner how much he makes on a gallon of gas they try to make you believe they only make 5 cents or 6 cents on the gallon, come on boys, we ain't completely stupid!

Posted by: gail Location: frenchburg on Sep 15, 2008 at 03:08 PM
they don't need to be fined they need to be put out of business. catching them do this and the government should put their business up for sale to the highest bidder, profit or loss! just like when a drug dealers cars/guns/ etc. are confiscated! how can prices be so high when a barrel of oil is lower then it has been in over a year!

Posted by: John Location: Greenup Co. on Sep 15, 2008 at 10:41 AM
The Governor will say something to the small gas stations, BUT will not say a word to the distributors and the local refineries!!!

Posted by: Jeb Location: KY on Sep 15, 2008 at 09:05 AM
I signed an order to stop price gouging at the pumps. That's the same as what the governor has done. Unless you enforce it, signing something doesn't do diddly.

Posted by: Wilhelm Location: Lexington on Sep 15, 2008 at 08:30 AM
I think that they ought to do what the feds do with drug dealers. Confiscate the property involved!

Posted by: Brandi Location: PoCo on Sep 14, 2008 at 09:24 PM
$5,000 is all? Most gas stations could make that up in one day... They need a much steeper fine.

Messer market on 25E north of Barbourville har gas $4.99 per gal I think it is price gouging but I bet he gets away with it you can do anything here if you know the right person

Posted by: Scott Location: Williamsburg on Sep 14, 2008 at 08:12 AM
WHY IS GAS $4.99 in Williamsburg...someone should report that.

Posted by: Casey County resident Location: Liberty on Sep 14, 2008 at 12:45 AM
On Friday morning, 9/12/08, the three main gas stations in Liberty all had regular gas for $3.69 per gallon. In early afternoon, all three had raised it to $3.95 per gallon. All three stations raised it at the same time. I wonder which station is the first to call the others to relay the new price?

You need to get to the head of the snake to get it.........go to the distrubuters they are the ones who set the overnight increases on gas by phoning all their stations on how much to raise prices.

Posted by: me Location: Eastern KY on Sep 13, 2008 at 09:04 PM
Geezzeee..... Why are so many patting this man on the back. Gouging is already illegal. So, let's see.. he signed a piece of paper that simply re-states the existing anti-gouging law and we are giving him praise for it. Yes, I agree that retailers should be held accountable. The commonwealth has so many problems already - in the middle of rigged transportation contracts, hiring problems, etc. It's no wonder retailers can do this in KY and get away with it. The commonwealth cannot operation effectively on a day to day basis - let alone help enforce consequences for price gougers! High gas prices have unfortunately already done the damager - I don't know how in the world the economy can ever overcome this. How will people make it? Maybe the governor should sign an emergency order that actually means something.....

it looks like that we is going have to leave our car park can not buy gas the price it is that is so sad they would jumo the price so high we cant buy it they should be made to lower the gas price thank you very much geneva wiley

I think the governor needs to freeze the gas prices so they can not go uo no more that what they are.If anything they can go down. When gas goes up from 3.89 to 4.59 over night, there is something wrong

Posted by: John Location: Madison County on Sep 13, 2008 at 04:19 PM
i used to work at a Gas station here in Madison County i'll tell you why some stations sell gas cheaper than others ok here we go. ok say today i fill up my tanks at my station for $2.99 a gal and i sell it for $3.50 when the price of oil goes up the other guys raise there price right then insted of selling the gas they bought for $2.99 for the $3.50 they go ahead and raise the price on us so they are getting 3 times what they paid for it and we are getting screwed.

Posted by: Margaret Location: Jackson, KY on Sep 13, 2008 at 04:06 PM
Gas station have been price gouging for a long time now and nothing is being done about it. I know gas was priced at $3.49 in Harrisburg the first week of September while in Jackson it was $3.69. So when the price of oil lowered why didn't the price of gas? The price of gas never reflected it, but let a storm be forecasted and watch the price of gas sky rocket. If they can raise it that quick, they can lower it that quick too but they never do.

Posted by: danny Location: loyall ky on Sep 13, 2008 at 03:25 PM
I was wondering who woke the governor up and told him the gas prices were high they have to high for ever. Why don't he do something to get the prices down, or is he in the pckets of big oil too? Just like the rest of our elected officals.

Posted by: Brandon Location: Berea on Sep 13, 2008 at 02:28 PM
I totally agree with Governor on this issue. Retailers should not be allowed to take advantage of the people anytime an event like this occurs.

Posted by: Joe Location: London on Sep 13, 2008 at 01:07 PM
Honestly, it won't matter if they do enforce it. Standard Shell has 15000 gallons of gas at capacity. They gouge it 1.00 that's 15000.00 they've made. Max fine for the store is 10000.00. They've still made out with 5000.00. Of course there willing to risk it, they still come out smelling like a rose.

Posted by: BJ Location: Barbourville on Sep 13, 2008 at 12:17 PM
What happens if we start loosing our jobs because we cant afford the gas to get there? or our families start starving because we have to use all our money to buy the gas to get to work and the stores???

Thank You Governor Beshear!

Posted by: JB Location: KY on Sep 13, 2008 at 10:27 AM
This isn't going to do a bit of good if they don't enforce it!! And that piddly little fine won't even make these oil companies blink..it's a drop in the pan for them...they need to do something more extreme.

piolt has raised their price $1.30 in 24 hrs they have not had any new deliveries somebody needs to put a stop to this the working people can't even afford to drive back and forth to work.

Posted by: charles Location: nicholasville on Sep 13, 2008 at 10:10 AM
Well it’s according to what and where you read it. The area that got hit is almost 25% of the refining and 19% of the U.S. oil. An article last week said the refining was at 75% due to low gas usage. So if all the other refineries would ramp up production, then they should pick up the slack. The Pres said this morning that we will be importing more gas during this time. All this orders by the gov to stop the price hick and it has done nothing. Talk is good but it is time for some action from the goc.

Posted by: Flat Broke Location: Knox County on Sep 13, 2008 at 09:38 AM
Why are gas stations raising their prices when they have already paid for the gas that they have in their tanks? I can see them raising the price if they are buying and filling tanks after the storm. Is this not considered price gouging? In Artemus at the Artemus Quik Mart the price of gas went from $3.59 to $4.59 overnight. Why, Jerry Smith did you do this to the people who shop with you on a daily basis? I really hope you are one who gets investigated and all that extra $ you made on the gallon you will have to pay back in fines for price gouging. This is just plain and simple GREED.

Makes you wonder about the people who run this statem and run stores. Why would the governor have to sign and order to stop price gouging of gas, that is something that these days should be in place at all times. Then what is to be said for someone taking advantage of a natural disaster to make a dollar several hundred miles away from the disaster. It is unbeleiveable how the population reacts to these things. Our government, has got to step in and do something to anyone caught price gouging no matter what the cause. Sooner or later we as people have got to take a stand against the stores that put any price gouging in place, and agains the officals that do not put this to a stop.

I know everyone that works has got to have gas. With that said....stop going places when not necessary. Stop letting your teens run around town half the night. Stop going out to eat, shopping, ect. If everyone would only buy gas to go to work the oil companies would feel the pinch and lower prices. These scare tactics of higher gas prices work for them. If all of you noticed when gas was 4.00 and more a gallon ppl stopped buying it unless they had to. Prices had gotten down to 3.48- 3.60 a gallon in most places. Then they get the excuse of "Ike". More money in their pockets and leaves ours empty. Stop going to Shell/ Marathon or any other place that uses these excuses unwarranted.Buy only what you have to have. No more. Make one trip to town for groceries, paying bills, ect. Instead of going two or three times a week. One person couldn't make a difference doing this but all of us working ppl would.Oh yeah, buy a locking gas cap 'cause the non-workers will steal you blind while you sleep

Posted by: Terry Location: Ravenna on Sep 13, 2008 at 05:48 AM
First the excuse for raising the price of gasoline was the Middle East now it's Hurricane Ike. Which is it? It neither one it's pure greed. When ceo's of the oil companies get huge salaries and the companies make record profits we are being conned. If the governor signed the order does that mean that the stations will lower their prices? I doubt it!This should have been done a long time ago. Lower gasoline prices will do more for the economy then about anything else. What upsets me even more is when the different gasoline stations call each other to see what they each are going to raise their price too. What happened to the free enterprise system? It's wrong for the stations in one area to charge the same price. Stores sure don't call each other if the price of milk is going up so that they all charge the same price. Citizens, we are being robbed and without a gun being pointed at us.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: berea on Sep 13, 2008 at 05:15 AM
Now we need the president to put a lock on the price. Wouldn't that be nice?

Posted by: Jenny Location: Versailles, KY on Sep 13, 2008 at 02:16 AM
This is something that should be monitored at all times, not just in these instances. How is a person supposed to choose between putting gas in their car to go to work (trying to support their families) and buying food for their children? No, no, the real question is, Why were things allowed to worsen to the point that we are now having to choose between those two things?

IT IS A SHAME!!!! SHAME ON THE STORE OWNERS, I TALK WITH ONE OWNER WHO SAID SHE MUST RAISE THE PRICE BECAUSE SHE WANTS IT TO STAY IN THE GROUND SO WE WORKING PEOPLE WILL HAVE GAS TO GO TO WORK ON NEXT WEEK, THEN SHE TURNS AND SAID SHE SOLD 1400 GALLONS OF GAS BEFORE NOON TODAY,SHE RAISED IT FIRST THING 0.50 CENTS PER GALLON THIS MORNING 9-11-08 NOW ISNT THIS A ATTACK AGAIN ON US, AND SHE DID IT, THATS PRETTY GOOD MONEY ISNT IT!!!!!!! THIS WAS IN THE WACO AREA, I WANT EVER STOP THERE AGAIN IF ALL POSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!

Every gas station in the state should be fined the $5000 or more mentioned in the video. All that I have seen are definitely price gouging and it needs to be stopped. The sad thing is is that crude oil is now under $100 a barrel yet gas is much higher now than when crude oil was $150. Something has to be done.

Posted by: Rachel on Sep 12, 2008 at 10:48 PM
He put the order in, but it isn't working at all. Prices are still going up and up.

Posted by: Jay Location: Ky on Sep 12, 2008 at 10:46 PM
So the govenor issues the order and the price raising stops...after they have already raised it through the roof...doesn't makes sense..he ought to make them drop it back down to at least what it was...not stop it at the higher price...what on earth are people gonna do????

i think that the gas prices are ridiculous its crazy there is alot of people and families that can't aford it more less nothing else and alot of these little children will be left without what they need this gas gouging is way out of hand and needs to be stopped they need to think of us we are working minimum wage and really by the time you take your gas out your only makin 2 something an hour how do they think that we can live like that

Kudos to Conway and Beashear? sounds like communist thugs to me.Its these clowns and their party in Washington is the reason that gas is high talking to ignorant people is a waste of time. I am telling you people its not the company's educate yourselves if you penalize the company's its only going to go higher gees. When you have tree huggers telling you you cannot pump or cannot build a refinery do not cry when gas goes up.

Something needs to be done about these gas prices. I have to drive 120 miles round trip to work. My husband drives 75 miles round trip to work. How can we afford to feed our kids having to pay 4.69 a gallon for gas. Why should we have to pay that for gas when the hurricane hasn't even hit yet. Its really clear to me that there is some major price gouging going on here. All we are trying to do is survive and raise our kids. I think someone could do someting to stop all of this nonesense. I feel like I get robbed every time I have to buy gas. If everyone would for one day would refuse to buy gas and stay home away from the grocery store and wal-mart and the shopping malls then maybe the prices would go down. If prices stay this way I don't know what all of us poor people are going to do. Who can afford to pay half of their paycheck to go to work its defeating the purpose.

Posted by: Sue Location: Parker on Sep 12, 2008 at 09:19 PM

You need to check out the Black Oak Quick Mart in Vanceburg Kentucky owners Rodney and Tammy Ginn they went from $3.69 to $4.45 and everyone else in Vanceburg is still under $4.00 a gal. If you don't call that gouging I don't know what you would call it.

Hey, Mr. President, why don't you in the last few months in office, do something for the working people of this great country. What are we going to remember about your years as president, how bad things are for the middle class, we work everyday and we just can't get ahead, I work everyday and things just seem to not get any better. I might as well stay home.

I understand the economics of supply/demand. I do not understand how the cost of the petrol that has already been refined and is in the ground waiting for use by the consumer can suddenly become more expensive. I know supplies are leaner, and a fair amount of the price is taxes; however, there should be an executive order to freeze gas prices. In times like these. Additionally, why does it take a day to increase by 30-40% and then a week or two to reduce the cost. Here is a time when people need to come together and demand legislators take action. If the refining industry was not lazy they would have invested in their infrastructure long ago. Many insudtries have regulatory hurdles to jump through, we do it...why should they be exempt. All other major industries have regulation and oversight, I say we move forward with pressure at state/fedral levels to regualte the refining industry as needed.

Every fuel supplier in the US should be fined for raping the American people. The dollar is up 12%, crude is down to $105. There goes those two excuses. Now 20% of the supply is temporarily offline, and gas shoots up 30%. If the gov can tell me what dog to own, why cant they tell the oil folks how much to charge, or are they already? Ron Paul for president!

Posted by: Micki Location: Lexington on Sep 12, 2008 at 04:25 PM
Gouging started when gas went up over 1.50. Now we "blue collard workers" are really paying the price, we can barley afford to pay for food, not to mention paying for gas to go to work. Maybe this should have been set for the oil companys who are now getting fatter and fatter wallets.

Did anyone notice who the first stations were to raise prices? Speedway/Marathon again as usual. It might just be time to boycott those companies for their price games, the government will not take action against them. If everyone could just forget loyalty for one month, they might get the hint. I know someone will say that all stations do it, and I agree, but it's those same ones who always start first.

nothing has been in the past to these people raising the prices of gas. it keeps going up up up up. it amazes me how it can go up 20 cents or more at a time but it only goes down by pennies at a time. This doesn't make any sense to me at all. This should be ILLEGAL to do.

Here in somerset gas prices range from $3.99-$4.15. I think the should lower to a dollar ninty-nine. the last time saw that price was a very long time ago!

Posted by: clay on Sep 12, 2008 at 03:16 PM
Until someone lops off thehead og the oil industry, we will continue being robbed

Posted by: Vicki Location: Paintsville on Sep 12, 2008 at 03:12 PM
The gas has went from 3.65 to 3.75 to 3.85 to 3.99. Did they get four deliveries today? I don't think so! If this isn't gouging I don't know what it is! Why has the refinery in Ashland closed? We don't have a hurricane here!

Posted by: Jenny Location: Frankfort on Sep 12, 2008 at 03:07 PM
If Gov. Beshear signed that order, then why are the stations being allowed to gouged us? Check Speedymart on Holmes St. It was $3.63 at 11 AM. It was $3.84 at 2PM. If that's not gouging, I don't know what is.

If raising a dollar overnight on a gallon of gas isnt gouging i dont know what is. Gas was 3.59 yesterday when i got off work and now today it is 4.59, situations like this is what causes citizens to loose faith in their government. They shouldnt be allowed to raise the prices in such a manner, the price per barrel is down and the storm hasnt even made landfall yet. you shouldnt be able to make decisions on predictions, only facts. We have tough times ahead and people need to rely on their faith in God to get through it. I am going to take advantage of the high gas prices and stay home with my 3 children and just relax. there is alot of things we are able to do at home and enjoy it. we only plan on going to church and back this weekend. We will face gas prices next week. Have a blessed weekend and keep praying...

Someone needs to tell the people of Barbourville about this since they have raised prices over one dollar today.

Thank you Gov. Beshear and Mr. Conway! I've said for the past 3 years that these oil companies should not be allowed to take advantage of the American public this way. Our hard working citizens cannot afford to spend half their paychecks on gas. They have children to feed and mortgages to pay. It is absurd that oil companies making billions in profits would try to rob people every time there's a hurricane or wildfires or whatever. I hope the CEO's of these companies realize that in the near future more of us will choose to drive cars that don't depend on oil, and in due time these companies will watch their profits fall or cease altogether.

Gas prices here jsut hit 5.99 a gallon and i have picture to prove it

Cudos to Governor Beshear for making a statement that we will not allow oil refiners and/or distributors to exploit this situation - especially at a time when oil prices have dropped to $100 per barrel. His declaration, however, will not be worth the paper it is written on if he and the attorney general do not follow up with strong actions if/when gouging takes place. We need action, governor, not just words!

I just filled up my gas and it was $5.00 a gallon!!!

Posted by: Lisa Location: West Liberty on Sep 12, 2008 at 02:37 PM
The price of gas is $5.00 a gallon in West Liberty. This is crazy! Someone needs to do something about this!!!

Posted by: Reality Location: Kentucky on Sep 12, 2008 at 02:33 PM
How about he calls for building new refineries in Kentucky?

Posted by: Donna Location: Lexington on Sep 12, 2008 at 02:32 PM
It's ABOUT TIME that someone started looking out for us!

Posted by: Sandra Location: Lexington, KY on Sep 12, 2008 at 02:20 PM
well, I have to say that's the first thing I think Gov. Beshear has done right since he was elected into office.

Posted by: Concerned Citizen Location: Jackson County on Sep 12, 2008 at 02:08 PM
I think this is crazy that we have to pay for the oil companies shutting down the oil riggs. Most people are poor and can not afford gas prices going over $3.00 a gallon little lone $4.00 a gallon. Gas prices are like a yo-yo they go up and down in a matter of days. Someone needs to put a stop to this BS.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 12, 2008 at 02:07 PM
Soooo, what will this do exactly? Prices surely won't drop

Posted by: Keith Location: Somerset Ky on Sep 12, 2008 at 02:01 PM
Not a moment too soon!! Now if they will enforce it. Gas prices in Somerset have been at least 30 cents higher than some other towns close by off and on all summer long and just went up to $3.99 this morning with talk of 5.00 per gallon coming so naturally everyone will rush right out to fill up at the cheap price of 3.99. How much do you think that gas cost them since nothing has actually happend yet to cause this increase? Last week I bought Shell gas in Glasgow for 3.48 and it was 3.78 at all stations in Somerset. I only by gas when I have no choice here at home. Doesen't that make everyone want to visit and live here?

Posted by: Randy Location: Frankfort,Kentucky on Sep 12, 2008 at 01:48 PM
Iam glad to see Gov. Beshear looking out for us.Thank you also Mr. Conway. This gas price game needs closure and if we as tax payers start passing on our thoughts on high gas prices we will in time get results.
