Rush to the Pump Leaves Some Stations Sold Out

By  |

Two Lexington gas stations literally ran out of unleaded fuel Friday evening. The Shell station and the Speedway station on Leestown Road were sold out after motorists made a rush to fill up in hopes of avoiding future price hikes. The Speedway was up and running later in the evening but workers at Shell weren't sure when their next delivery of fuel was coming.

The theory behind the rush to the pump is that gas prices will increase sharply if Hurricane Ike damages oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. Gas prices have already risen sharply throughout the Commonwealth over the past couple of days. This has prompted Governor Beshear to declare a state of emergency. The declaration allows the Attorney General to investigate those businesses who might be looking to profit from gas shortages.
