Gary Gearding of Newport says he was moving his car off the road to avoid any falling limbs after Sunday's powerful wind storm.
That's when he says a large branch from a pear tree split and fell on his neighbor's driveway. When he went to help, the tree fell on him.
Gearding is now recovering from fractures in his face, back and neck. He also lost vision in his left eye.
"If it would have hit me here more with a force, I don't think I would have been here," says Gearding.
Family and neighbors worked to pull Gearding from underneath the tree. He says despite his injuries, he is just grateful to be alive.

God bless you for trying to help a neighbor. I hate that you suffered injuries and hope you have a speedy recovery. Good things come for people like you.
