He's hit another a milestone. A Lexington man, famous for how many times he's been arrested, took his 1,000th trip to jail.

Police arrested Henry Earl for alcohol intoxication, a charge he's faced hundreds of times before.

Earl is a pseudo-celebrity because of his extensive record. He's been featured on late night talk shows and has several websites dedicated to tracking his arrest record.

Earl's 1,000th arrest happened late Monday night on South Limestone. He'll be in court Tuesday afternoon to answer to this latest charge.

If you're wondering what 1,000 arrests equals, here's a look at Henry Earl's history.

In all, he's spent 4,123 days in jail.

35 of his 1000 arrests have been this year alone, landing him behind bars 189 days in 2008.

On average, Earl is out of jail about two days before he lands back behind bars, although this time he was out for four days before his latest arrest.

Someone needs to tally what each of these 1000 arrest cost, and how much he spends on his beer or whatever he is drinking....Can he afford a place in public housing or somewhere. I pray for his safety and now that winter is coming on, all the homeless is in danger again. I don't think he would hurt anyone but it is sad.

I say put this pathetic monkey in jail and leave him there for about 10 years. At least it will prevent him from furthering his total number of arrests.

In Washington DC where I live I see gov't workers, lawyers & other professionals making fools of themselves & falling down drunk on a nightly basis coming from the bars as I leave my night job you all should leave this poor man alone and arrest some of there people....

This guy is just wasting your tax money. After 1000 arrests he should be just thrown in jail for life.

Posted by: Prayer Warrior Location: Williamsburg on Sep 26, 2008 at 10:22 AM
What he needs is prayer that the Lord will help him break this alcohol addiction. Lord, speak to him in ways that he will understand and hear. Break the spirit of addiction from this man and set him free. Not so that he will become a celebrity but that his life will bring You glory, Lord. I thank you that we will hear a change in this man's life. Thank You for loving him and dying on the cross to set sinners like US all free from All sin and All addiction. Amen.

(Continued from first posting) If someone after having too much to drink acts inappropriately he or she can be charged with a crime such as disorderly conduct (which he has a few times), or if driving, a DUI (not even arrested once). I do not know what is in the arrest reports, but I have not seen anything to indicate that this guy has done anything to anybody. He isn’t stealing from people or assaulting them. The small percentage of charges that are different (trespassing, non payment of fines, begging, etc.) may be the result of these ridiculous, constant arrests more than anything else. They have made him unemployable and saddled him with massive debt. I find it remarkable that he hasn’t committed more serious crimes as a result of constantly being locked up, which to me just proves that he isn’t a danger to anybody (though doing a 1000 days in jail may change that). It bothers me that a man who engages in conduct that only hurts himself is constantly being thrown in jail for it

Posted by: BG Location: Seattle, WA on Sep 25, 2008 at 01:58 AM
I feel that my view of this case is significantly different than just about everybody else’s. I blame the city of Lexington (and maybe other cities if some offenses occurred elsewhere). This is not because they have not “come down harder” on this guy, but because they keep arresting him for a very minor offense that most people have committed (though most are not arrested for it) more than a few times. Many people in bars or walking home after having too much to drink are likely committing the offense of “alcohol intoxication” (whatever that means). It’s possible that the only difference between Mr. Earl and many other people is that he may drink more often and since he is homeless he has nowhere to go that isn’t “public”. I question whether “alcohol intoxication” should even be a crime. The act of getting “intoxicated” itself is not hurting anybody except maybe the one who is imbibing. (Continued in next posting)

YOU GOTTA LOVE "GOOD OLE KENTUCKY LAWS". THIS IS EXACTLY WHY HE PROBABLY CONTINUES SOME OF HIS BEHAVIOR.."PUBLICITY"... AS WE READ ON HERE, HE HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED BY THE "LATE NIGHT SHOWS" AND "WEBSITES" FOR HIS ARREST RECORD. THIS IS JUST LIKE A MAN CONVICTED OF MURDER AND BEING RECOGNIZED FOR THE HORRIBLE MURDER HE COMMITED AND PUTTING SOME OF THE EVIDENCE IN A "MUSEUM" OR HIM WRITING BOOKS WHILE IN PRISON AND HIM MAKING MONEY ON IT. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE AND SOCIETY TODAY? THIS WILL CONTINUE AS LONG AS THE JUDGE OR THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM LETS HIM. SO ANYWAY GOOD LUCK ON HUNTING FOR YOUR 1,001 ARREST. IM SURE YOU WILL FIND IT REAL SOON...

Posted by: Ron Location: FLA on Sep 24, 2008 at 11:43 PM
He keeps getting arrested for "being intoxicated"? Now I know it is illegal to drink and drive, or drink and fight, but are you saying it is illegal in Kentucky just to drink?? The mere fact of being under the influence of alcohol is illegal in Kentucky?? Glad I live elsewhere!!!

WOW!!! cant believe that!!! he should be in for good because alcholism is not too safe for others around.

The police do not go out looking for Henry. Most of the time he goes into a business, especially in cold weather, and has them call the police to come and get him. As for being a repeat offender, the law applies only to felonies. Drunkeness is only a misdemeanor. The only person Henry will kill is himself either by alcohol or by staggering out in front of a car.

Posted by: Steve Location: Lexington on Sep 24, 2008 at 06:09 PM
Some of you people are nuts! I have read that he should be put in prison for his addiction (sorry, public intoxication is a MISDEMEANOR, he CAN'T be put in prison for that), and someone else said "what happened to the 3 strikes law" (there is no such law in KY, and the one you're referring to in other states is for VIOLENT FELONIES, NOT MISDEMEANORS). I agree with LeaveHimAlone, people who think you should take an alcoholic who obviously needs help and throw him in prison and throw away the key ARE THE PROBLEM. What we need is to get rid of all the lawyers who have destroyed our justice system, so that a judge can sentence him to MANDATORY INPATIENT treament, so he has no choice whether he wants to be there or not. However, lawyers have fixed it so unless he is an immediate danger to himself or others (he is not), then they can't make him get treated. So, he is doomed by the system to roam the streets, beg for money, and keep getting arrested for being a drunk. How sad!

Posted by: mike Location: Berea on Sep 24, 2008 at 06:00 PM
I got to know Henry a few years ago and it's clear that he is a person that wouldn't harm a fly. He probably likes being known as "James Brown" because sometimes he shows off his dance moves. It seems that somewhere down the road he liked the attention he was getting from this and decided he wanted this to be identity. I hope the best for him and may the Lord bless him.

Posted by: Pam Location: Michigan on Sep 24, 2008 at 05:53 PM
LOL...got to say....he's no dummy. If I was home-less I would make sure I stayed behinbd bars. I live in a suburb outside of Detroit...and to watch the homeless people go thru a cold bitter winter is heart wrenching. Maybe the state should take control and get this man the help he needs. And let's all pray for him cause who knows...one of these days we may be worse off. Something to ponder...isn't it? smiles...

Posted by: roger Location: lexington on Sep 24, 2008 at 05:05 PM
it's not the Police, it the Judge that fails to do anyhing about this man. He obviously has a substance abuse problem. He should be given a suspended sentence, ordered to a in-patient abuse program and held in criminal contempt if he is re-arrested.

You see this same "Big World" drunk at bars and at restraunts then leave on a lawn mower. I have! Let me drive through Richmond on my lawn mower watch me spend the rest of the week in a cell. I'm not making fun of the guy but having people like this be the face of your town/city is shameful

In all, the guy has spent 11.3 years in jail.

Posted by: Note to LeaveHimAlone on Sep 24, 2008 at 08:31 AM
You just got thru saying he won't admit to his alcohol problem and doesn't want help then you bash people for not being compassionate? If he doesn't want help and isolates himself, we aren't isolating him by ignoring him. He already made it clear that is what he wants. Quit making it sound like we are adding to his problem. If help has been offered and he doesn't want it, you can't force it upon him. He's a drunk, some people think he's a celebrity (those are the people adding to this problem), and he doesn't want any help. He'll eventually die from liver problems due to his drinking and we won't have to worry about him. Sorry to be so morbid buy like you said, he doesn't want help so my hands are tied.

Posted by: Mary Anna Location: Flatwoods, KY on Sep 24, 2008 at 08:26 AM
Well, my questions are: "Why is he allowed to get out of jail? Why not put the man in treatment for his addiction? If he refuses treatment, why not sent him to prison? He certainly does not need to be in the news. He does need help with his life.

Posted by: char62 on Sep 24, 2008 at 07:47 AM

Well no suprise to me look at all the people that molest kids time after time and they should never be let out of jail to do this over and over!! I guess they kept letting him out of jail so he could go home and watch The Andy Griffit Show with Otis getting drunk all the time and being let sleep it off in jail. As long as stuff like this makes the news -- it will continue to happen-- I believe this nation has a lot more to be concerned about then Earl!!!!!

Posted by: Tina Location: Ky on Sep 24, 2008 at 04:36 AM
This is so sad..Instead of putting this man down we need to lift his name up to the Lord..This man is in need of Help. His addiction to Achoal is very serious. It is not funny maybe this man is really reaching out for help...I Pray he gets help..and we need to lift his mother up to the lord also. I dont even know this woman but i say she has probably spent many nights worrying about her son...May God Bless this family...

Posted by: Give It a Rest Location: Richmond on Sep 24, 2008 at 01:18 AM
He's a homeless man. Maybe he gets into trouble so he can have a roof over his head and 3 hot meals a day. His crimes at least were no worse than Alcohol Intoxication, and a couple of Trespassing charges. Any of you want to help him out by giving him a place to live and help getting a real job? If not stop worrying about your tax dollars. Not like they don't go to worse things already, like war.

Posted by: Me Location: Lexington on Sep 24, 2008 at 12:35 AM
Is this really news worthy? Why do some see this as being "funny"? This man is a blight on society and really does need to be locked up for 1,000 days (even if they really can't do that!) This is embarrassing to all of us. It's a shame it isn't embarrassing to him.

Posted by: Rob Location: Richmond on Sep 24, 2008 at 12:16 AM

Isn't there some kind of three strike policy for this kind of behavior

Posted by: Mammy Location: London on Sep 23, 2008 at 09:25 PM
Now now, this is a human being, with feelings and emotions...he has every right to get out there and drink if he wants to, and be all googley-eyed, intoxicated in public. And be put in jail. A lot. And.. who are we to judge him, he needs a good warm place to sleep and 3 squares a day too, just like everybody else. He... just obtains those things a little differently than we do. Good grief, I hope people can recognize my sarcasm here, because I'm disgusted that this man has been arrested 1000 times and is a psuedo-celebrity for it. Surely this is a joke.. a late April Fools prank from WKYT, surely our judicial system hasn't really let this man go 999 other times. Surely not. Surely.

Wow, all these comments by people who don't have a CLUE about this man's situation and the court system he has been in and out of since he "came" to Lexington in the 70's. Here's what you might want to know about good ol' Henry...he has been sentenced to 6 months in jail to "dry out" several times, and within days of getting out, he's back again. He's a die-hard alcoholic and has been in treatment. The first part of getting the "help" you people keep talking about is to admit you have a problem and want help. He won't do either. He seems to like his existence, doesn't own a car and hasn't driven in decades (so NO, he won't get in a car and kill someone), and is HOMELESS. The real problem is people like you walk past him on the street and instead of being a COMMUNITY and trying to help him, you ignore him or cross the street as not to encounter him. YOU ISOLATE HIM, which only contributes more to his problems. If we would be compassionate, maybe we wouldn't have homeless problem

Way to go WKYT lets see how much more attention we can give this dead beat. Lexington may be mentioned nationally as a place to visit. Lets get back to Good News............

And, we are supposed to give him a medal for this great accomplisment? No wonder, when I call the police to report a crime, it takes several hours for the police to respond to the call. Find a way to get him off the streets and out of Lexington, so our police can better assist the law abiding citizens. Sorry, Henry Earl, I'm not impressed.

this just goes to show you what kind of legal system we have here in ky. repeat offenders are not getting punished like they should for their crimes. this guy should be in jail and stay there if he has nothing better to do than go out and break the law over and over and over again. one of these days he will be driving while intoxicated and he will kill someone. i guess that is what the police is waiting for him to do kill someone on the road then put him in jail for murder !!!! why do they have to wait until someone is killed before they do something with these kinds of people. they are nothing but a burden to society.

Seems to me, this man should be in a ward or clinic to get help. While we all have fond memories of Otis, the man is wasting taxpayer money. I'm not an accountant but it seems to me the costs of putting this man behind bars every few days comes close to equal the cost of incarceration. Perhaps the general population of lexington would be better off without him on the streets. I'm sure the arrests are petty but enough to take him in instead of a friendly citation. Does this not come under the repeat offender definition? Also, the media coverage and his "star" status should be ignored as I am sure he will be batting for 2000. I sure hope the local law enforcement wises up and acts to get this man help or at least a permanent home away from the law abiding persons in this city.

Can you say "REPEAT OFFENDER!" Why is this guy allowed to get out of jail in the first place? This is not a milestone that anyone should be proud of. The man needs some rehab in a serious way. Shame on you WKYT for making light of this man's problems and doing a story on him. He needs HELP!

Typical drag on Society. Never even tried to change and never will. We have no use for people like this. Run him out of town since he refuses to be a productive citizen.

Is this something he is proud of?? Why is he not getting longer sentences?? Why is he allowed around law abidding citizens?? This shows the justice system with a big black eye.

What a wonderful judicial system we have in Kentucky. Not only do we let murderers, child molesters, rapists, and repeat offenders go free...WE BRAG ABOUT IT. I understand this man did none of these horrible things but bragging about how many times he has been arrested makes Kentucky look just as foolish as other states think we are. We are only living up to the stereotype forced on us. This is a sad situation. Obviously this man needs help, not another slap on the wrist so he can do it again and make the front page. But let him out. I'm sure one of the 100's of other repeat offenders Kentucky has released this year can help him out with another crime. He should branch out more. It isn't like the state will prosecute him for anything. If they do he can always claim discrimination because of all the other murderers they have turned loose this year!!!

SOunds like hes used the court system to get 4 years of free room and board how abuot we we make the record stick and just put him away for all the costs to tax payers. After all if people are gettin themselves locked up on purpose its proof that we need less cops not more.
