LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - The U.S. Education Department says three Kentucky applications are among finalists in the latest Race to the Top federal funding competition.

Bourbon County Schools, the Green River Regional Educational Cooperative and the Kentucky Valley Educational Cooperative are among 61 finalists announced nationwide Monday.

The finalists were selected from 372 applications sent to the department in November. The new Race to the Top competition focuses on how districts can personalize education for students.

The department is expected to select 15 to 25 winning applications for four-year awards that will range from $5 million to $40 million. The awards will be announced by Dec. 31.

The Kentucky Valley cooperative is made up of public school districts in rural Appalachian counties, while the Green River cooperative serves counties in central and southern Kentucky.
