Firefighters Battle Intense House Fire

Winchester Firefighters quickly put out a fierce house fire.

Two fire departments responded to the home on Melbourne Street, off Cook Avenue after 8:00 a.m. Wednesday.

A passerby called 911 to notify emergency officials about the fire.

"Our Public Works department was working in the area and noticed it and called it in. We couldn't find anyone at home," said Chief Daniel Castle.

The homeowners, Pleas and Nancy Smith, weren't there.

The home had heavy fire and smoke damage. Emergency crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to nearby structures.

No one was injured.
