Friday, a judge will hear arguments over whether Shane Ragland should get a new wrongful death trial.

Trent DiGiuoro's family was awarded just over $63 million earlier this year.

That was after Ragland pleaded guilty to manslaughter for the 1994 shooting death of DiGiuoro, who was a U.K. football player.

Ragland's attorney has said the multi-million dollar verdict was excessive.

Excessive? The worst possible thing a justice system could do is release a criminal from any responsibility. How are we supposed to trust the law if lawyers and judges make a mockery of it. Mr.DiGiuoro had no choice at life, it was taken from him. I think that was far more excessive than 64 million dollars.

This man is guilty, guilty, guilty!!!!!! It sickens me to think that taxpayer money is being wasted on this murderer-by confession. What has happened to our judicial system.

Sorry folks, the murder trial was a railroad job that purely played on emotions. The prosecution did not prove anything beyond a reasonable doubt. No eyewitnesses, ballistics did not match the gun, the girlfriend was not really convincing, the FBI Agent LIED ON THE STAND! Wake up and look at the facts and quit thinking with your emotions. Not Guilty is the only verdict you can HONESTLY render.

$63 Million is excessive... I mean by this point it's obvious that he did it. And I know people say "You can't put a price on someone's life" but apparently you can. The family should be required to spend 1/2 of that money in donations to others and some kind of memorial.

He had the opportunity to mount a defense at the trial, and refused to do so. Why should the state have to pay for a new trial just because he doesn't like to outcome of the one where he refused to defend himself?

i wish this trial was over. look at the money tax payers are out each time the go back to court. just charge him and get it over with.

Admitting to killing someone could be considered excessive. If he is not protecting assets what is the difference in 63 million or 6 million ?

If the 63 million dollar verdict against Shane Ragland is "excessive", then isn't the MURDER of Trent DiGiuoro (or even manslaughter that Shane Ragland pled to) also excessive? After all, ITS ONLY MONEY, and Ragland's daddy has plenty of it! While money can never replace the taking of a human life, this is as close to justice that the DiGiuoro family will ever come - UNTIL THAT GREAT FINAL EXAM DATE FOR SHANE RAGLAND, WHEN THE BOOKS ARE OPENED.
