Combat Veterans Battle In Ky. Statehouse Race

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Two combat veterans are facing off in a
legislative race to represent communities around Fort Knox in
central Kentucky.

Combat pilot Lt. Col. Tim Moore spent 14 years in the Air Force and the past 10 years in the Kentucky Air National Guard and is trying to hold on to the state House seat he won two years ago.

That was when former state representative and retired Army Col. Mike Weaver stepped down to run for Congress. Weaver lost that race and a subsequent race for state treasurer. Now he's trying to win back the legislative seat from Moore. The Moore-Weaver matchup is one of 40 contested legislative races.

Republicans currently control the Senate 22-14-1, and Democrats lead the House 62-36. Of the contested legislative races, 11 are for Senate seats and 29 are for House seats. Far more incumbents drew no opposition in the Nov. 4 election.
