CAMPBELL COUNTY, KY - A proposed additional lane each way on Interstate 471 has some residents in Newport afraid of the loss of some homes, as well as peace and quiet, reports NKY.COM on its Sunday morning Web page.
The additional lane was one of 33 recommendations approved by the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments this month in an I-471 corridor study.
The study took 19 months and gathered public input to determine what improvements are needed for I-471, Ky. 8, the AA Highway and U.S. 27 in northern Campbell County, he told NKY.COM
The recommendations don't ensure the state will complete the projects, but they carry weight when the Transportation Cabinet determines priorities, said OKI spokesman Brian Cunningham. OKI must still determine whether the recommendations will make it into OKI's 2030 plan. Some of the recommendations are part of the 2030 plan already, he told NKY.COM.
One of the recommendations that caused the most concern has been adding one additional lane in each direction on I-471 from the interchange with Interstate 275 to the Ohio River. This recommendation is already in the 2030 plan.
The additional lane would improve traffic flow, Cunningham told NKY.COM.
