A woman faces charges that she stole thousands of dollars from an account, designed to help students.
A grand jury indicted Jennifer Mendez for theft by unlawful taking.
She was the Parent-Teacher Organization treasurer, and a part time assistant, for Hustonville Elementary School in Lincoln County.
Investigators say she stole thousands of dollars from the PTO account. Students had sold candles to raise that money.
The school's principal says Mendez used the money to go on a shopping spree.
Mendez tells 27 NEWSFIRST she only spent money on things for the school. She also says she was not the only person with access to the money.
She no longer works at the school.
