One Killed After Shooting Outside Kentucky Church

COVINGTON, Ky. (AP) - A gunman fatally shot one man and wounded another Saturday outside a church in northern Kentucky where the men went to attend a funeral, police said.
The shooting occurred about 11 a.m. at the Ninth Street Baptist
Church, just south of Cincinnati, said Covington Police Sgt. Jim
Donelson. One shooting victim was pronounced dead at St. Elizabeth
Medical Center nearby and the second was taken to University
Hospital in Cincinnati but no information was given on his
Police said they arrested Frederick L. Davis, 40, of Covington,
on charges of murder and first-degree assault. Donelson said
investigators didn't immediately know the motive for the attack and
withheld the victims' names while kin were being notified.
The Rev. Richard Fowler, pastor at Ninth Street Baptist Church
who was officiating at the funeral, told The Associated Press the
slain man was Cincinnati Rev. Donald Fairbanks, pastor of New St.
Paul Missionary Baptist Church.
Fairbanks' stepson Ronald Glover, contacted by phone by The AP,
said the family was in shock and didn't want to discuss the

Fowler didn't witness the shootings, but said another man
attending the funeral was outside when he saw a man walk up to the
vehicle driven by Fairbanks, who had arrived with a clergyman from
his church.
Fowler said Davis had gone to the funeral intending to find a
woman he'd had a relationship with. The woman was attending her
grandmother's funeral, Fowler added.
Instead, Davis encountered Fairbanks, who had counseled the
couple previously. The two men began to argue on a sidewalk beside
the church parking lot, and Fowler said the witness saw Davis put a
gun to his chest and shoot. He then allegedly shot the other man in
the vehicle.
Fowler said Fairbanks had enough strength to run toward a park
down the street from the church. The shooter chased him and
Fairbanks fell to the ground at the park. The alleged shooter fired
again at Fairbanks, according to police.
Fowler said the wounded passenger sought help in the church and
police were called. Authorities later found and arrested Davis.
Fowler said he was shocked that a shooting would take place near
a church and was thankful more people weren't hurt.
"I'm feeling numb to know that it was so close to the church,"
Fowler said. "I'm prayerful for the family, the congregation,
realizing the pain they're suffering now. Their grief must be
