UPDATE: A jail escapee accused of killing the mother of his child remains in the hospital this Tuesday afternoon.

No information was available on Robin Maple's condition.

He was flown to the University of Kentucky Hospital from Morgan County after police found him and Melissa Patrick in a car.

Both with gunshots wounds.

Patrick died at the scene.

The double shooting happened nearly a month after Maple escaped from the Montgomery County jail.

He'd been there on charges of abducting their son.

----------------------------------------------------

He'd been on the run for weeks, but now the search for an escaped inmate ends with a deadly shooting.

Kentucky State Police say a man who escaped from the Montgomery County jail was found Monday morning with his ex-girlfriend, who had been shot to death.

Robin Maple escaped last month and has been on the run. His ex-girlfriend, Melissa Patrick, told 27 Newsfirst recently that she feared he would come after her and their 18-month-old son, Wyatt.

Police received a call about shots being fired at a residence Monday morning in Morgan County.

Kentucky State Police say Robin Maple went to his ex-girlfriends home and then abducted her.

Her parents, who live nearby tell 27 NewsFirst that he tried to make contact with their daughter last week, banging on her car door and police were contacted, but never found him.

They went outside this morning to find Robin Maple fighting with Melissa Patrick and trying to shoot at her, before driving his car away with her inside.

KSP says Melissa Patrick was fatally shot. They aren't sure if this happened at her home, or inside the car. Robin Maple drove to a nearby home and had a resident call police. He also had been shot and was seriously injured.

Maple escaped from the Montgomery County Jail in October after kidnapping his and Melissa Patrick's son and having a standoff with police.

Police are looking into who he has been staying with in the last month before today's incident. If someone has been hiding him, police say they could face charges.

Perhaps, a reasoning as to WHY this man was a trustee would help. I mean HOW INSANE! What in the world. I feel the blood of that wonderful, beautiful woman is NOW on the Montgomery County jail's hands! I mean he treatened her BEFORE he escaped. Yet, they decide he is TRUSTEE material!!!! Whatever! Whoever made that decison SHOULD NOT have a job...and should be held responsible!!!! Thoughts and prayers to the family. SHAME ON Mont. Co. Jail!!!!

He's alive.

Posted by: mj on Nov 12, 2008 at 01:57 PM
this jailer needs to be charged with assiting in a murder.. this is insane,, it is completely his fault that she is dead, and a child is without a mother. She was trying to protect her baby!!!!

It's sad that this happened to Missy.I went to school with her & sat with her at lunch everyday. I pray for her family and children. You know she loves you and is with you every day.

A clear case of inside good old boy stuff. Can you believe with Roberts record he was a trustee?? Can you really believe anyone was looking for the guy? Well now it is to late and any one responsible for this jailer, judge, sheriffs dept, whoever hid or helped Robert Maple in any way. Where did he get the gun? Its almost 50 miles from Richmond to Mount Sterling but you can smell and inside job from here.

First off, I must say that the whole situation is a very tragic sad situation. I do however find it amazing of the comments of some people on here, who know nothing about the situation. I have read over and over, the person helping to hide him should go to jail, I totally agree, but its sad when after he escaped he has been seen with the woman he killed on numerous occasions. Mellissa was put in a safe house for her protection, she never stayed one night, she did not want to stay. I totally agree that Robin deserves what he gets, and Montgomery County jailer Dewayne Meyers, should be held responsible and the family should seek civil action against the jail, jailer, and employees.

Dwayne, I can only pray that you are able to live with the guilt of what has happened. Small town favors can come back to get you and this just goes to show that you never truly know someone or what that person is capable of. I just hope from now on you seek Gods advise before you decide who to make "trustee" . May God bless those poor children and Melissa's family. May God bless the Maple's family also.

Is he dead or not... We have heard that he died yesterday afternoon but these small town officals are not talking. Are they trying to cover something up, oh no they wanted do that. they have been great role models as officals. Let some one like that out into harms way

Posted by: Lynn Location: Ky on Nov 11, 2008 at 10:53 AM
This should be an example that ALL Ky jails need to either re evaluate their work release program or have KY do it for them.. Changes need to be made so that this wont happen again in which should have never happened... Jails are too lenient about who they allow out of jail for work detail or in some cases to go to the store or out for ciggarettes.... guess the jails are so greedy for saving money and putting it in their pockets they FORGET why some of these guys are behind bars to begin with.

Posted by: melissa Location: lexington on Nov 11, 2008 at 10:26 AM
This makes me sick!!This poor baby has suffered enough.I think that the Montgomery Co. jail should be held libal for this murder. The man was a kidnapper and they made him a trustee?? Come on!!!So now, a small boy and his sister are motherless.Good job Montgomery Co jail,I am sure the people of you county feel safe with you on the job.

Posted by: Mad Location: Richmond on Nov 11, 2008 at 08:56 AM
The jailer should be held accountable for letting him "escape" so easy. Because of his faith in the killer, a little boy now has no mother. Good going!!

Posted by: Former Citizen Location: Lexington on Nov 11, 2008 at 08:50 AM
Her family can thank Dewayne Myers and the fine job he does as the jailer - it was very convienent that Mapels escaped - most of the Mapels family have money - you do the math.

Posted by: David Location: Paris on Nov 11, 2008 at 08:02 AM
This loser should have never been or even had the smallest chance of being on the work release program. I just can't wait to hear what the jailer and the judge have to say about letting this KILLER have the chance to get out. And I also bet you'll never hear from either of them. They both should be headled acountable for this awful, awful crime. Some one better call The Man. Oh sorry, you'll have to call the other man, because "The Man" just got of jail him self.

Posted by: john Location: inez on Nov 11, 2008 at 07:03 AM
just a min. here folks he escaped,he wasnt released early, so back up and try it again.i to am sorry that this happened but the jail should be held accountable.give thoughts and prayers out to the family.

If the Montgomery Co. jail had been doing their job - none of this could have happened- I believe he had done enough for him to have been kept locked up- not give him a chance to just walk away from the jail- He didn't escape from jail he walked away!!!!!

Posted by: brenda Location: mount sterling on Nov 11, 2008 at 01:29 AM
i think its a shame the police didnt protect her if they have she wouldnt be dead and leaving her poor children

Posted by: citizen Location: mt. sterling on Nov 10, 2008 at 10:55 PM
This is the example that the judical system is showing our young children today. Now these children are without their mother because of the incompitence of the officials in Montgomery County. Can anyone go to jail and still be able to get out in the public to do whatever they want? I don't know how these people can lay down and sleep tonight knowing what they let happen. Maybe we have the wrong elected officials in office

I could NOT live with myself if I was the Montgomery Co Jailer! (or the person or persons responsible for hiding this A** for the last month!) He left his baby in under a wrecked vehicle & ran! There was a standoff with police! He was facing 20 years to life & was placed on a $100,000 bond by the Judge! How can the "JAILER" justify labeling him as a "trustee"!?! If he does not resign, I think the citizens of Montgomery Co. need to elect someone else for Jailer in the election! According to news story, there are 2 if not 3 children whom have lost their mother! And the citizens of KY will have to pay by using their hard earned tax money to keep an IDIOT alive for the rest of his life! Hope he gets the DEATH PENALTY!

There is 4 children without a mother or a father now. What kind of Good Jailer is going to let someone be a trusty that is in jail for kidnapping their child and then having a standoff with the police. Just goes to show you that MSPD was not looking for him to hard. My prayers goes out to the children that our left without a mother or father and also to Melissa's Family. I also will pray for the Mapel family because Lord Forgive me but if Robin see's daylight again he deserves what he gets. This is the only child that Billy has left and ow he has went and done something stupid. My prayers are out to the family that has lost a love one. Montgomery County we need to do what we can to get The Jailer out of there.

This is a bad situation. This lady had four children. Even though 2 was older that was still their Mother. My prayers are with her children and her family.

Posted by: Tom Location: Mt. Sterling on Nov 10, 2008 at 08:26 PM
Perhaps the jailer in Mt. Sterling who allowed Maple out of the jail should be charged for allowing this to happen, or for at least not doing his job properly

Posted by: Paul Location: Lex on Nov 10, 2008 at 06:29 PM
Why didn't this woman have any parotection? I'm mortified !!!

Posted by: Steve Location: Lexington on Nov 10, 2008 at 06:15 PM
Hopefully he won't survive the bullet wound he suffered, because if so us taxpayers have to look forward to 30 years of a public defender's appeals to keep him out of the death chamber where he belongs. I also hope they find out WHO was letting him stay at their home since he escaped in October, and they should face a minimum of complicity to commit murder and get about 20 years in jail for harboring him all this time because they are just as guilty as he is if you ask me. Whoever you are that let him stay with you since he broke out, you should be ashamed of yourself for not turning him in, he is a cold-blooded killer who isn't worth the oxygen he breathes into his lungs even now, and I hope the police find you and put you in jail for a LONG time.

Very sad. God bless the remaining family members.....

Posted by: Daniel Location: Lexington on Nov 10, 2008 at 05:44 PM
I agree with Raymond in Georgetown. What is so hard about keeping these punks behind bars??? Lawmakers need to stiffen the laws and start punishing these criminals more severely beginning with DUI offenders. I know a man RIGHT NOW who's out driving around on suspended and he's had (4) DUI's!!!!! It's ridiculous.

Posted by: Steve Location: KY. on Nov 10, 2008 at 05:35 PM
I said it sounded like an inside job when he escaped, and I still say it. Why did he ever get the chance to escape??

Posted by: Jean Location: Lexington on Nov 10, 2008 at 05:15 PM
small counties, politics,a judge thaat turned a cheeck to her plea for help, I would get thaat judge out of office at ALL cost, and how was it that this guy was aloud outside? way to go jailer, I bet things change in your lil town very soon, this is so sad, you can bet her family wont let this die.

Posted by: unbelievable Location: mt.sterling on Nov 10, 2008 at 05:07 PM
i hope that man gets exactly what he gave although i think that death is the easy way out.. i wish for him to rot in jail for the rest of his life

Posted by: Dave Location: Floyd on Nov 10, 2008 at 05:06 PM
Where was the Morgan County Sheriffs department and the KSP? Why didn't our state and elected officals protect her?

Posted by: Candy Location: Knott county on Nov 10, 2008 at 05:03 PM
I have not heard any news about this man escaping. Is he the one that hurt his baby by crashing his car with it in the car while he was driving like a fool?Well I guess someone may feel guilty now?

Posted by: Becky on Nov 10, 2008 at 04:11 PM
The Montgomery Co Jail should be held responsible for this and the Sheriffs department you know he has had to be in the area probably with his family. and the sheriffs offie hasn't bothered to look for him. we all know how small town politics goes. and know someone has died from it all. shame, shame, shame

my prayers are with the families. this story has been in the news for sometime now. the little boy has lost his mommy and daddy, i pray for the baby

Posted by: Albert Location: Mt Sterling on Nov 10, 2008 at 02:35 PM
If he would have been behind bars were a inmate should be...this wouldnt ever happen. Now there is a child without a mother, who died tring to protect the child.

Posted by: Sue Location: Ky on Nov 10, 2008 at 02:27 PM
So sad that it has come to this- two small children left without a mother- I think the jails/prisons need to think twice before letting prisoners out to do work- keep them where they put themselves --BEHIND BARS!!!!!

Posted by: montgomery co citizen Location: mt sterling on Nov 10, 2008 at 02:05 PM
why was he given a chance to escape???100,000.00 bond and outside in street clothes???
