New numbers say Kentucky has moderate flu activity already this season.
The source is unlike any other -- search engine Google.
The company has launched Google Flu Trends.
Google combines flu-related queries entered into its search engine with data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The search engine reports flu cases in Kentucky have spiked since the beginning of the month.
Arkansas, Mississippi and Maine are also reported to have moderate flu activity.
The rest of the United States has minimal to low activity.
Google officials say this way of collecting data is much quicker.
It says traditional flu surveillance systems take one to two weeks to collect data.
