A major winter storm is on the way to the bluegrass state. Local high water issues are possible early Wednesday and that will be followed up by heavy snow and sleet. Significant accumulations are likely Wednesday night and Thursday.
The Community Action Council plans to help more than 6,500 low-income households with energy bills this winter. Natural gas price hikes have contributed to nearly a 30 % increase in applicants for the 2008/2009 season.
Applicants who need financial assistance from the LIHEAP (Low-Income Housing Energy Assistance Program) must meet qualifications based on monthly income.
Jack Burch, Executive Director for the C.A.C., says, "For a family of 4...If the income is $2200 a month or less then that family is eligible."
There are several sign-up locations around Lexington, including one on Georgetown Road, Cardinal Valley, and at Buckhorn Plaza.
Persons needing assistance this winter are urged to call 1-800-244-2275.
Donations can also be made at the Community Action Council or through the Winter Donation box on most energy bills.
