Grand Jury Will Hear Pit Bull Cruelty Case

MAYFIELD, Ky. (AP) - A grand jury in western Kentucky next week will hear evidence against a couple who police say used pit bulls for dog fights.

Joanal and Amy Deberry have been charged with 30 counts of animal cruelty in Graves County.

Each charge carries a maximum punishment of one to five years in
prison.

The couple was arrested on Nov. 5 after Graves County sheriff's deputies found 72 pit bulls at the couple's home and on another property about two miles away

Veterinarians who examined the dogs say at least 30 had scars consistent with injuries from dogfighting or low weight indicating they were being trained for fighting.

The grand jury meets on Dec. 18.
