Gov. Beshear Calls For Private Sector Help With Needs

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Gov. Steve Beshear has signed an executive order creating what he calls the Kentucky Commission on Philanthropy to help provide important services at a time when state government is struggling with financial problems.

The Democratic governor said he wants the commission to enlist private-sector partners to focus additional resources on the state's most challenging issues.

Kentucky has nearly 850 private foundations that hand out more than $120 million a year. Beshear is calling on those foundations to consider rallying around common goals.

He said state government, under current economic conditions, can't meet the demand for all the services needed in Kentucky.
