A Jessamine County man is starting his new year homeless after a powerful fire swept through his home.

The fire broke out on Lukie Drive off Tates Creek Road near the Jessamine-Fayette county line. The homeowner and neighbors knew the house would be lost, but worked hard to save the family pets trapped inside.

In the end, it was too late. A dog and a cat died in a fire.

Authorities believe the cause of the fire was an electrical malfunction.
