Legislation has been filed in Frankfort that would ban the sale of novelty lighters in the Commonwealth. Representative Derrick Graham (D-Frankfort) introduced the legislation last week.

Lieutenant Carter Northcutt is among the first responders who supports such a law. He is a Frankfort firefighter and also serves as the chairman of the Juvenile Firesetter Intervention Coalition of Kentucky. Northcutt says the lighters are very dangerous in the hands of children who often mistake them for toys. He cites incidences in which children have been burned or have mistakenly set fires.

Maine and Tennessee already have legislation on the books to ban the lighters and several other states are following suit. No word on when the measure in Kentucky will make its way to the floors of the legislature for a vote.
