The search was called off for a wanted Powell County man after authorities learned he was not lost in the woods after all. He reportedly called a deputy last night reporting he needed help after running from authorities trying to arrest him.
Authorities spent hours Thursday night and Friday morning looking for Donnie Catron, but had to call off the search around 5:00am Friday because of the dangerous cold.
Police say Catron ran off after a deputy approached his home in Clay City around 8:00pm Thursday.
"He had a warrant out for failure to appear in court for a traffic violation and theft of a credit card charge", says Deputy Robert Mathews, with the Powell County Sheriff's Department.
Catron's mother, Judy Barnett, drove him away from their home on Hidden Valley Road and the fled into the woods. He then reportedly called a deputy around 9:30pm saying he was cold, wet and lost. Authorities began searching for Catron.
"We didn't want him to be out there freezing to death", says Deputy Mathews.
Authorities were unable to find Catron. When they were called to an overnight burglary at his neighbors home this afternoon, they decided to check his home again.
A person living with Catron told 27 NEWSFIRST the man came home around 6:00am Friday and got some of his things before taking off again.
Police are now investigating the possibility Catron may be responsible for the break-in at his neighbors home.
Catron's mother was released from jail Friday afternoon. Police charged Judy Barnett with attempting to allude police and reckless driving. They say she was driving the car when Catron jumped out and ran into the woods.
