Bill Would End Early Release Program For Prisoners

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A Kentucky senator is seeking to stop a cost-saving program approved by the General Assembly last year that granted murderers and violent offenders an earlier release from prison.

Crescent Springs Republican Sen. Jack Westwood is sponsoring a
proposal to end the inmate parole credit program. So far, nearly 2,000 inmates and more than 2,600 parolees have benefited from the program.

Justice Cabinet spokeswoman Jennifer Brislin tells The Louisville Courier-Journal that eliminating the program would cost the state prison system $8.7 million through June 2010.

Meanwhile, Kentucky is facing a $456 million budget shortfall in the fiscal year ending June 30.
