Keeping Food From Spoiling During Outage

Many people have no power at home and may be concerned about the food in their refrigerators and freezers.

Here are some tips, compliments of the Fayette County Health Department.

Let's start with your freezer. If it's half full, food there should be safe for up to 24 hours.

Food in a full freezer will be good for 48 hours.

As for your refrigerator, take out milk, other dairy products, meat, fish, eggs, gravy and leftovers that can spoil and pack them into a cooler surrounded by ice.

And remember, keep your freezer and refrigerator doors closed as much as possible to trap the cold air inside.
