Cold Temperatures and Widespread power outages are making the job more difficult for firefighters. This morning, crews in Burgin had their hands full fighting a large apartment fire that injured two women.
Without electricity, crews couldn't use a fire hydrant sitting in the front yard of the century old building on Main Street. Crews say they have felt handicapped by the widespread outages for more than a day.
"It is a significant fire for the water that we have," explained Chief Brian Sexton of the Burgin County Fire Department. "The fire hydrants have to have pump pressure."
Crews were forced to fill up tanker trucks repeatedly at a nearby creek in order to put out the fire.
The building is subdivided into three apartments. First responders made sure everyone was out. They rescued a woman and her adult daughter from a first floor apartment where they say.the fire started. The building has been without power for more than a day. Fire crews say the women may have been trying to stay warm.
They were both taken to the hospital; one with serious burns and the other for smoke inhalation. Crews say the building is a total loss and the official cause of fire is still under investigation.
