Black Pike is one of many roads left nearly impassable in western Lincoln County because of the ice storm. But on Monday, Ky. National Guard troops were out in high number, trying to clear roads, and improve the lives of many Kentuckians.

“I want to make sure the people out there are safe. They have medications they need. I enjoy helping the elderly people,” said Sgt. Michael Dobbs, part of the 149th Infantry, based in Somerset, but in Lincoln County on Monday.

Sgt. Dobbs and more than 20 others are focusing their efforts in Moreland and Hustonville....where trees have blocked roads.

“To make sure they have free access in and out, to get both fuel and water, medications,” said Sgt. Dobbs.

Utilities are still down in the region.

“We still have 4,000 to 5,000 people out of power,” said Troy Gingrass with the Lincoln County Fire Dept.

And water is just now beginning to flow again. County firefighters are working to meet needs of the shut ins.

“Anybody's that out of power, in need of food and water, they can call here at the EOC, we get set up,” said Gingrass, who said people can call 606-365-9600 if they need help.

Troops say will be in Lincoln County “until the job is done.”
