EKU Student Sues Fraternity After Beatings

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Eastern Kentucky University student Brent Whiteside has filed a lawsuit against Kappa Alpha Psi national fraternity over hazing incidents in which he says he was repeatedly beaten.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reported the suit in Fayette Circuit Court seeks undetermined punitive damages.

Whiteside claims the fraternity had no regard for his health, safety and welfare during the time nearly a year ago when he was a pledge to the local chapter in Richmond.

In his suit, filed Jan. 22, he claims he was beaten for more than a month in early 2008, resulting in his hospitalization for kidney failure.

In a criminal case stemming from the allegations, Thomas Barnes, Alonzo McGill and Gabriel McLaren pleaded guilty last month to fourth-degree assault charges and are under home incarceration.
