Louisville Bridge Reopens After Hit By Barge

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A U.S. Coast Guard spokesman says the bridge that carries Interstate 64 between Louisville and New Albany, Ind., has reopened after a barge tow struck one of the supports.

Coast Guard spokesman Kenny McNealy says the Sherman Minton
Bridge reopened shortly after 8 a.m. EST Thursday. The bridge is under the jurisdiction of the Indiana Department of Transportation.

McNealy said the department inspected the bridge and determined it was safe.

Coast Guard Lt. j.g. Kirk Beckmann in Louisville said a vessel towing 15 coal barges hit the bridge about 5 a.m. and it was immediately closed as a precaution.
