Airport Shuts Down Shorter Runway

On Friday at Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, the runway used by the doomed flight of Comair 5191 closed permanently.

Construction began on a new runway at the airport. The smaller 3,500 foot general aviation runway is being replaced by a 4,000 foot one.

Airport officials say the decision had nothing to do with the fact that the Comair disaster happened after a commercial jet took off from the smaller runway.

The airport's primary, 7,000 foot, runway will remain open during the construction project.
