One Person Dead In Apartment Fire

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A fire in a Jefferson County apartment complex killed a 61-year-old man early Sunday morning.

The Courier-Journal reports that the blaze appears to have been started by what firefighters called "careless smoking." The apartment's smoke detector was not working.

Okolona Fire Marshal Mike Allendorf says investigators have ruled out other possible causes.

Bradford Hopkins Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene. Jim Wesley with the Jefferson County coroner's office says Hopkins died of smoke inhalation and burns.

It started around 1:30 a.m. EST in Hopkins' living room. Firefighters were able to put it out in about eight minutes.
