WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama today is naming Kansas
Governor Kathleen Sebelius to be his health secretary.
If the Senate agrees, Sebelius will spearhead the president's
drive for health care reform. And she'll take over a sprawling
health bureaucracy that runs everything from Medicare to cancer
research to overseeing food safety.
The 60-year-old Democrat has long experience with the ins and
outs of medicine and its costs, both as Kansas governor and state
At the White House, she'll have to share the health portfolio
with a reform czar. Obama plans to name a different person for that
Tom Daschle, the former senator who was Obama's first choice for
health secretary, would have held both jobs.
