Federal Bid-Rigging Trial Moved To Covington

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - U.S. District Judge Danny Reeves has ordered a trial for three men charged in a bid-rigging case to be held in Covington.

Reeves filed the order on Monday. He cited pretrial publicity as the reason he opted to move the April 28 trial out of Frankfort.

Former Transportation Secretary Bill Nighbert, road contractor Leonard Lawson and Lawson aide Brian Billings are accused of steering state highway construction contracts to Lawson's companies.

The three have entered not guilty pleas.

Defense attorney Larry Mackey argued that extensive pre-trial publicity prejudiced the jury pool in Frankfort. Federal prosecutor Ken Taylor didn't object to the trial being moved.
