Study: In Ky., 1 of 35 In Criminal Justice System

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - A new study says one out of every 35 Kentuckians was either locked up or on probation.

The Pew Center on the States' study released Monday looked at figures from 1982 to 2007. It also showed one out of 92 Kentuckians was either in prison or jail.

The report says Kentucky's imprisonment rate went up by about 250 percent from 1987 to 2007. Nationally, the study says the total population of the U.S. corrections system now exceeds 7.3 million - one of every 31 adults.

Kentucky Department of Corrections spokeswoman Lisa Lamb said the state has 21,313 people in prison, and more than 7,000 in jail.
