Members of the Asbury College softball team are in pretty good spirits despite some scary moments on their way home from a game in West Virginia Saturday night. One of the vans in their 3-van caravan caught on fire destroying all of their equipment and some personal belongings.
Fortunately no one was hurt.
Team member Emily Shetler said she was laying down in the middle row of the van when she heard the van making some strange noises. She also reported seeing some flashing lights. The driver quickly got the van off the road and within minutes, it was engulfed in flames.
Coach Larry McCullough said he heard three explosions and saw flames shooting some twenty feet into the air.
"We are very blessed no one got hurt. It could have been worse," he said.
McCullough says insurance should cover the loss but he's not sure how long it will take to process the claim. Meantime, the rest of the team's games stand in limbo. For now, Tuesday's game has been canceled.
This season marks the inaugural season for the team and their record stands at 5-3.
