Health Department Gives Tips for Flood Victims

Video will be available shortly

If you experienced flood damage in your home, the health department has some tips to keep you healthy and safe while cleaning up.

Keep your children and pets away from any areas that had flood damage until its cleaned. While you're cleaning up you should wear rubber boots, rubber gloves and goggles.

Throw out items that can't be cleaned and disinfected, such as mattresses, carpeting, carpet pads and rugs. This helps to prevent any mold from growing.

Throw out all items that have been wet for more than 48 hours that can't thoroughly be cleaned.

Open windows, doors, use fans and dehumidifiers to help dry your home out. Though, fans should be placed at a window or door to blow the air out so it doesn't spread mold.

You should also check your home heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, if it was flooded with water. By turning it on you could spread mold throughout your house, and you'll need to have it professionally cleaned before turning it back on.

All of these tips are essential to assuring a safe way to getting your home back to normal.
