FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Jurors have begun a second day of deliberations in the case of two disbarred lawyers accused of bilking their clients out of millions of dollars in a diet-drug settlement.
William Gallion and Shirley Cunningham Jr. are on trial for mail fraud charges. Prosecutors claim they took the lion's share of a $200 million settlement intended for 440 clients who had been hurt by the diet drug fen-phen.
A jury of seven women and five men deliberated all day Thursday without reaching a verdict and began again Friday morning.
Defense attorneys said the two got into trouble by following the advice of a nationally known class-action expert who they had hired to advise them on how to divvy up the money. Prosecutors charged the two "got caught with their hand in the cookie jar."
