Pirates Holding an American Captain Have Summoned Assistance

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - Pirates and U.S. warships are racing to
the spot in the Indian Ocean where an American sea captain is being
held hostage by a handful of pirates.
A Nairobi-based diplomat says the pirates holding Capt. Richard
Phillips have summoned assistance. He says skiffs and motherships
are heading toward the area from the coast.
The pirates heading to the scene may be planning to use other
hostages captured recently as human shields.
A resident of a Somali pirate stronghold says four foreign ships
previously captured by pirates are heading toward the lifeboat. Two
of the ships have a total of 54 hostages aboard.
One U.S. Navy destroyer is already in the area and other
warships have been dispatched.
