Lexington may not be a Mecca for sandcastles, but there was a very important one built in town last month.

The sandcastle was built and was going to be dedicated in honor of Pat Smith, one of the victims of Flight 5191. Unfortunately it was destroyed by vandals, but that memorial it's back and better than ever.

In early September five vandals were caught on tape destroying the 10 foot tall sandcastle meant to honor Pat Smith.

It cost more than $5,000 and it took an Iowa artist more than four days to sculpt in the Housewarmings store parking lot near Woodhill Plaza.

Local artist Damon Farmer has stepped in to reconstruct the castle. He says he didn't personally know Pat Smith, but he's honored to be a part of the memorial.

It's a fitting tribute to someone involved in Habitat for Humanity. He made people's dream houses and we are making a dream fantasy castle.

Karen Mendez Smith says this is a wonderful tribute to Pat.

The sand castle represents hope for human spirit and it is a tribute to him it's something that everyone can be involved in. We are going to put a plaque at the base of the castle and everyone is invited to put their initials in it or their hand print if they want.

This Sunday the sculpture will officially be dedicated to Pat Smith. The dedication is open to the public Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Housewarmings on Palumbo Drive.

The castle is expected to last a few weeks if vandals leave it alone.
