Police arrest a Berea man jailed for wanton abuse of an adult after they say he encouraged mentally handicapped people in his care to engage in sexual contact.
According to police, Ryan Lee Whitaker, 27, of Berea, had a job as a driver for a van that took mentally challenged adults to an adult daycare facility in Richmond.
Police say one of the passengers told a caretaker that he/she didn’t want to go to the daycare anymore because of the alleged incident on the transport van.
After investigating the claim, police found that on April 13, 2009, Whitaker allegedly gave instructions to mentally challenged passengers that led to the sexual abuse charges.
Berea Police say Whitaker directed his passengers to engage in sexual contact with each other while on the transport van.
Whitaker was arrested on charges relating to the case.
Police say this was not Whitaker's first time in trouble with the law. He was arrested on a charge of assault fourth-degree after police say he allegedly abused a three-year-old child physically, over a three-year period.
Whitaker’s wife, Debbie Lyn Whitaker, 23, of Berea, was also arrested and charged with assault fourth-degree, for the same crime.
