Fayette County Superintendent Out of Surgery after Bike Accident

Updated: Mon 11:28 PM, Oct 09, 2006

Fayette County school Superintendent Stu Silberman underwent major surgery today.

The operation was designed to repair broken bones Silberman suffered during in a biking accident on Sunday. We're told Silberman was on mile 24 of a 27 mile cycle trek when he lost his balance and fell on Russell Cave Road.

Another biker, also a Fayette schools administrator, called 911 for help.

Silberman underwent six hours of orthopedic surgery Monday at UK Hospital. Doctors say he's got a long recovery ahead, but was in high spirits and ready to get back to work.

Silberman is in traction in his hospital bed and is listed in stable condition.
He could be released from the hospital later this week.

Silberman is an avid cyclist who goes around to county schools preaching bike safety. Doctors say the fact Silberman was wearing bicycle safety gear probably prevented the educator from even more serious injuries.
