Man pleads guilty in phony cop case

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A welder has pleaded guilty to using a gun
while impersonating a police officer to rob suspected drug dealers.

Tony Ray Herald appeared in federal court at Pikeville on
Monday.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reported Herald said he and Vernon
Todd Griffie, a former Perry County volunteer sheriff's deputy,
would arrange to buy drugs, then return dressed as police officers,
put the victims in handcuffs and take cash and pills. The crimes
occurred in Letcher and Knott counties.

Herald's sentencing was set for Aug. 17.

Court records show Griffie has filed a motion for a
rearraignment to enter a guilty plea.

The newspaper said Griffie is awaiting a psychiatric evaluation
after a suicide attempt.
