Convicted Killer Speaks Out at Sentencing

A south central Kentucky man has been sentenced to death today in a 13-year-old triple slaying.

The killings happened at a farmhouse in Adair County in 1993. William Meece was convicted last month in the deaths of Joseph
Wellnitz -- a veterinarian -- his wife and their son.

Meece becomes the 37th inmate on Kentucky's Death Row. During a hearing this morning in Warren County Circuit Court, Meece made a statement but did not show remorse for the killings. The trial was moved to Bowling Green from Adair County.

Prosecutors say Meece and the Wellnitz's surviving daughter contrived the murder plot to collect an inheritance. The daughter, Meg Wellnitz Appleton, pleaded guilty last year to three counts of complicity to murder.
