Set Your Clocks Back an Hour

Posted: Sat 11:11 PM, Oct 28, 2006

Get set for an extra hour's sleep tonight. It's that time of year to 'fall back.'

The official change happens at two a.m., so set your clocks back an hour before going to bed tonight. That means it's also time to change out the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

Daylight savings time was originally an idea of Benjamin Franklin's, but it wasn't used until World Wars I and II. By delaying darkness by an hour, Americans saved money by using their electric lights less.

Next year the end of daylight savings time moves to November, thanks to a new energy bill passed by Congress.
