Family of Young Frankfort Marine Remembers Daughter

Family members of a 23-year-old Frankfort Marine, killed in a car crash on Mother's Day, are remembering the young woman they say was proudly serving our country.

Being a Marine runs in 23-year-old Kelli Rawlings family.

"Two of her brothers are marines", says David Rawlings, her father.

So, it only made sense Kelli would enlist as well.

"I think in her heart it was tugging at her to do something like this", says David Rawlings.

They say Lance Corporal Kelli Rawlings grew up wanting to serve her country. She was doing just that, based in Yuma, Arizona.

"Sometimes we'd talk for an hour or two on the phone", says Sharon Rawlings, her mother.

Sharon Rawlings last spoke with her daughter on Saturday evening.

"I called her back around one in the morning and she was out having fun for a change, and I said 'go ahead and I'll talk to you later'. We didn't get that chance", says Sharon Rawlings.

Hours later, early on Sunday morning, Kelli was involved in a car crash. She was with two other Marines. It was that day on Mother's Day two Marines came to her parents home to notify them of the crash.

"It's still not real. I don't know that it will ever be real", says Sharon Rawlings.

She was a young woman family members say was living her dream and serving her country, who they say was taken too soon from a crash where police say the driver was speeding and had been drinking.

Her parents only hope their loss of this young woman who meant the world to them will also touch someone else.

"We hope that there's at least one young person out there that is listening that will maybe take a second though of doing something that is a bad decision, whatever that might be", says David Rawlings.

Meanwhile, they say they are grateful for those that have been there for them during this hard time.

"We're just grateful for the outpouring of love we've received", says Sharon Rawlings.

As for Kelli Rawlings visitation, her family says it will be held on Monday, May 18th from 5-9 at the First United Methodist Church in Frankfort.

Her funeral will be held at 2:00 Tuesday afternoon at the church with her burial to follow. She will be given full military honors.
