Police reward safe drivers, passengers

Summer is traditionally a deadly time on Kentucky roads. In order to cut down on highway deaths, the Transportation Cabinet is launching its Click-It or Ticket Campaign.

Troopers have come up with a creative way to encourage those who are buckling up and to give a friendly reminder to those who aren't.

On Monday, drivers and passengers who were buckled up at drive-thrus at some local McDonald's restaurants received coupons for free food. People not wearing safety belts were given an educational card instead of citations.

Police are trying to remind people who are going to be traveling over the Memorial Day holiday to buckle up when they head out.

Kentucky has has one of the lowest seat belt usage rates in the country. New statistics show about 73 percent Kentuckians use their seat belts.
