Somerset Man Behind Bars After Pursuit

The pursuit began when Somerset Officer Larry Patterson Jr. tried to stop William Carrender after he failed to stop for a stop sign. Carrender made several turns in the Twin Lakes Subdivision before leaving the road and driving through a field.

Authorities say, Carrender ran an off duty Somerset Officer and his family off the road during his attempt to get away from officers. Carrender headed north on KY 1247 at a high rate of speed before pulling into a residence and fleeing his vehicle.

Investigators then say, Officer Patterson caught Carrender and took him to the ground. Carrender continued to struggle with Patterson and attempted to get Patterson’s weapon out of its holster. Patterson pepper sprayed Carrender and was able to then get him handcuffed and under control.

Police say Carrender had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage and there was a smell of marijuana coming from the car. Carrender was unsteady on his feet and had blood shot eyes. Officials say, an open container of alcoholic beverage was in the vehicle.

Carrender is charged with disregarding a stop sign, fleeing or evading police 1st degree, DUI with aggravating circumstances 1st offense, resisting arrest, attempting to disarm an officer, 2 counts wanton endangerment 1st degree, and possession of an open alcoholic beverage container in a motor vehicle.

Carrender is being held in the Pulaski County Detention Center.
