LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - A high-ranking eastern Kentucky politician
has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges that he took
part in a vote-buying scheme in the May primary.
Bath County Judge-Executive Walter Bascom Shrout, of Sharpsburg,
faces charges of conspiracy to buy votes, making false statements
to a federal agent and obstruction of justice.
The 54-year-old Shrout is the 10th resident of Bath County, about 67 miles east of Lexington, charged with vote fraud this year as part of an ongoing investigation.
Prosecutors say Shrout gave cash to at least five people with
instructions to use the money to buy votes in the May 2006 election
for Bath County judge-executive. Shrout won the May 16 primary
against Danny Michael Swartz, who was indicted in July on similar
charges.
