Rounds of showers and storms continue to push across the region. Flash flooding is the main threat tonight into Wednesday.
Students usually get Memorial Day off from classes, but some schools are actually in session Monday.
A handful of school systems are using the holiday to make up for the multiple days they missed due to harsh wintry weather earlier this year.
One of those school systems up and running is Madison County.
But school officials say teachers incorporated the importance of Memorial Day into their lessons.
"Teachers are using this as an education moment or opportunity for students to learn more about Memorial Day because a lot of little ones don't understand what Memorial Day is or why we celebrate it," said Ann Burns, principal of Kirksville Elementary.
Burns says attendance was less than normal at Kirksville Elementary, as many parents chose to use the three day weekend for family activities.
132 students were recorded absent. That is three times more than the average day.
