27-year-old Sarah Brady was attacked in Feb 2005 by 22-year-old Katie Smith. Police believe Smith found Brady's information on an on-line baby registry. Smith befriended Brady by telling her she had received some of Brady's baby gifts by mistake. She invited Brady to her Ft. Mitchell home to get the gifts. However when Brady arrived things went terribly wrong.
She tells Oprah that Smith acted as if she was going into labor. Police say Smith wasn't pregnant but for months she'd been wearing a disguise to look as if she were.
Brady says she thought something wasn't quite right and wanted to leave the apartment but she was concerned for smith's well being. She says "It tore me up. I didn't know what labor was. Here was this girl I barely knew in excruciating pain but on the other hand my mind says get the hell out of that apartment."
Brady says that's when things turned violent. Smith began attacking her and she had a knife. Brady tells Oprah, "At this point I am petrified. I am thinking my God I'm gonna die. She tells me no one is home and I'm screaming trying to get the door open. she's hitting me as hard as she can. Suddenly she puts her hands around me, around my neck and pulls me back into the apartment."
That's when Brady says she got the knife away from Smith and stabbed her three times. She ran from the apartment and called 9-1-1.
Katie Smith died that day but Sarah Brady and her unborn child survived.
Six days after the attack Brady gave birth to a healthy baby girl named McKaila Grace Hatton.
Friday will be Brady's first TV appearance since the birth of her child. she's also promoting a new book about the attack. It was written by her attorney, Eric Deters and is called "Saving Grace: The True Story of a Mother-to-be, a Deranged Attacker, and an Unborn Child. The book will be available December 1, 2006.
The interview will air on the Oprah Winfrey show on wkyt at 4pm Friday.
