Child burned in gunpowder explosion

The father of 13-year old Zack Riley says Monday was one of the most terrifying days he's ever lived through.

"When I saw my son laying in that ambulance, it broke my heart" says Chris Riley.

Zack and his brother spent the first day of their summer vacation playing outside their Nicholas County home. The two ended up finding an abandoned home next door and went inside.

"I had told them numerous times to stay away and to not even go up there", says Chris Riley.

The two boys gunpowder and matches inside the home. Zack Riley caught on fire when the boys ignited the gunpowder.

"They know not to play with fire and know not to play with matches. They may have not known what was in the can", says Chris Riley.

Chris Riley says his son took off his burning clothes and ran home, but he suffered burns to his neck, face, and hands.

EMS crews rushed the 13-year old boy to UK Hospital. He is now in good condition at UK.

The teenager told his dad he never intended to play with matches again. Chris Riley is hoping his family's scare will alert other parents.

"Make sure they know what's laying around and if there's something laying around that could hurt their kids, they need to put it up", says Chris Riley.
