FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Gov. Steve Beshear has ordered Kentucky
lawmakers to consider gambling legislation when the General
Assembly convenes a special session this month.
Beshear added the measure to the special session agenda
Thursday, the day after ordering lawmakers to convene June 15 to
consider legislation aimed at relieving the state's estimated $1
billion shortfall in the next fiscal year.
The gambling legislation would allow video slot machines at
Kentucky's race tracks to help boost the state's horse industry.
Gambling advocates including Beshear have tried and failed
numerous times to get similar legislation passed into law.
Gambling opponents have said they plan a court challenge if
lawmakers pass any measure that legalizes gambling.
